The new Democratic majority in the House is only 11 right? What if 12 or more of the newbie Dems don't vote for Pelosi and the Republicans vote unanimously for whoever our guy is. Wouldn't that make the Republican Speaker of the House? I know it's far-fetched, but it had me thinking.

Dems vote 100% in lockstep every time.

I think the Speaker has to get 218 votes to be elected. He/she needs an absolute majority, not just a plurality of the vote.

Since there’s no way the newbie Democrats would vote for a Republican, there’s no way there’s a GOP speaker.

I don’t know what happens if Pelosi doesn’t get that majority. Do they keep voting over and over, until someone drops out, a compromise candidate emerges, or some other back room dealing happens to get someone to 218 in the Democrat caucus????

Something like that worked for Willie Brown in the 1990s, as he managed to bamboozle the CA legislators into making him Assembly Speaker after the GOP had won a majority.

But I doubt the GOP is as Machiavellian as the Rats, it would never work in the House of Reps.

IIRC, we had a Republican (Rino) house speaker up here that cut a deal with Democrats to get elected.

That would be an interesting scenario, have a Republican go to some disaffected Democrats, “If you vote for me as Speaker I’ll let (insert some crazy bill ) come to the floor, Pelosi will never let that happen.”

Don’t care so long as they advance an agenda I want. Absent that, it makes no difference who they are.

I’m going to win 10 lotteries in a row, be elected world emperor, and solve all the world’s problems, I know it’s far-fetched...

The Constitution doesn’t define political parties, or say that House Speaker is decided by majority political party of House.
Article I, Section 2, Clause 5: The House of Representatives shall chuse their Speaker and other Officers; and shall have the sole Power of Impeachment.

In fact, when the states finally wise up and repeal the ill-conceived 17th Amendment, the repeal amendment needs to prohibit political party support for federal officials elected by ordinary voters imo.

Everyone can claim minority status. Septuagenarians are a minority and we are likely to have one as speaker.

Those who may be 1/1024 native American may be a minority - different from the minority class of “native Americans”. It’s possible that a majority of Americans could claim “1/1024 Indian” status, but most of us don’t want to be associated with Warren.

Whether or not we have a speaker from a lefty-designated “special minority” is the question?

I don’t believe it works that way. I believe that a name is submitted and voted on by the whole House. It does not have to be a member of the House. It could be George Soros. It could be Hillary Clinton.

The New Democrats are not beholden to the old establishment. The new Jacobins are in town.

When it comes to them vs. us they will always be 100% (minus whoever needs to look independent on an issue whose vote doesn’t really matter to the outcome a la Manchin/Kavanaugh).
