Bellinger -- Baseball's Cagey and Speedy Mr. Interference

Last night there was a controversial play that allowed L.A. to score 4 runs. With respect to that, I wrote this a few hours ago.

Harold Reynolds and Joe Girardi were on the post game show last night. They went into great detail about how they were sure that Bellinger interfered.

They got out on their little studio baseball field and showed how Bellinger ran up the first base line in FAIR territory. They both thought it was interference by Bellinger. They said if they were managing Boston they "WOULD HAVE BEEN SCREAMING" at the no-call.

But the umpires chose not to call it for some bizarre, perhaps cowardly reason.

And it being unreviewable, nothing happened and Boston scored 4 runs as a result.

Bellinger interfered and it wasn't called.

Reynolds and Girardi even included an illuminating few seconds of actual "film" from the game from a camera that had been placed DIRECTLY looking toward homeplate from the right field line --- directly down the line as Bellinger hurried to first base, running INSIDE the line the entire way. It was a judgment call by the umpire that he did not interfere. Reynolds and Girardi were vehemently disagreeing. (QUITE EXCELLENT OF THEM to call out the umpires on national tv!)

That to me was one of the worst (and important) non-calls in baseball history.

Running Lane to First Base

********************************

PS --- Bellinger is a smart kid. He was very sly. Being a left handed batter (as I was all my playing years), he knew that the natural momentum/force of a left-handed hitter after his swing is to pull your body out toward FOUL territory as you are leaving the batters box. He had to quickly and purposefully adjust and turn INTO THE FIELD OF PLAY so he could be a problem for the catcher. He is a very fast runner. The catcher's throw grazed him right before he got to the bag (he was still in fair territory).

The catcher should have DRILLED HIM right in the back. Then baseball fans may have gotten the correct call.

Gutless umps.

"It ain't nothin' till I call it." — Bill Klem, legendary Major League Baseball umpire

LOL....... old Bill.

Seeing that Slick Corey Bellinger's sly,and speedy scampering sprint to first base was basically inside the chalk the whole way to first base, it is to his credit that he fooled the umps, or, they just decided they would CHOKE on the interference of his devious trek to first base. (Maybe they wanted the game to go 7) ...... more cash for all.

Other comments:

• You pretty much have to throw the ball into the runner’s back to get this called. LOL

• And the runner pretty much has to be 100% on the grass. It was a good no call.

• Other than for purposes of determining whether the runner interfered with a fielder within the meaning of Rule 6.01(j), whether a base runner willfully or deliberately interfered with a fielder with the intent to break up a double play within the meaning of Rule 6.01(a)(6) or (7), shall not be reviewable.

• Says the guy or gal ARGUING THAT A NON-REVIEWABLE CALL NOT BEING REVIEWED MEANS IT MUST HAVE BEEN CORRECT. (ROFL)

Not necessarily talking about this specific play, but THERE IS A RUNNER’S LANE FOR A REASON. If they get hit by a quality throw to first base and it disrupts the first baseman's ability to make the catch, they are considered to be willfully interfering if they aren't in the lane. If they abide by the spirit of the rule and run inside the lane, they are permitted to enter fair territory for the last few feet in order to touch the base.

(The fact that the runner in this instance was running speedily and inside the chalk nearly the entire way down to first base, hindering a possible catcher’s throw, effected the catcher’s reactions/ability to make himself a throwing angle.

The runner should have been ruled out by the umpire because he interfered all the way down the line ……. and his devious, incorrect path was obviously purposeful.

The fact that this runner was so fast made it difficult for Vazquez to take time to get himself a better throwing angle. Yet the cause of the interference with the first baseman AND the catcher was the direction the speedy (and sly) Bellinger took to first base. The umps blew it!

LOL …… there's always someone who just started watching baseball last month.

Great memory....

HOWEVER...Probably wouldn’t have happened today as Gibson probably would have been called out for interference or - at the least- the momentum would have been ‘broken’ for 10 minutes or so while INSTANT REPLAY(UGH!!) would have taken over.

AND the umpire and his ‘he had it stolen’ could have been overruled much as todays feats are etc....

Also, not that I knew anything about it but MOST of those mustaches made them look like ‘porn stars’...<: <: <:

Thanks for finding & sharing film...

LOL ... they did, especially Eckersley's 'stache.

I posted this just to try to give some of the L.A. fans, after the disappointment of this World Series, something uplifting from their L.A. baseball past.

My favorite baseball moment EVER!

What made it even more sweet was I was in a bar surrounded by A's fans. Little old me in my Dodger hat.

As Kirk hobbled up to the plate I chanted, "Kirk! Kirk! Kirk!"

When he cracked it, I was yelling so loud I drownded out poor Vinny.

I think the A's fans were dismayed. Haha.

AND to make it even better, I was driving to the bar and the game had already started. When Canseco parked one earlier in the game, I went crazy and my shades somehow came off and fell out the window. And I really liked those shades.

But Kirk made up for it.

Thanks for posting that awesome video.

Being from Pittsburgh and being 13 years old at the time, Bill Mazeroski’s homerun in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series was great for me. But I loved that Gibson at bat!
