Proposal 18-2

A proposed constitutional amendment to establish a commission of citizens with exclusive authority to adopt district boundaries for the Michigan Senate, Michigan House of Representatives and U.S. Congress, every 10 years

This proposed constitutional amendment would: • Create a commission of 13 registered voters randomly selected by the Secretary of State:

o 4 each who self-identify as affiliated with the 2 major political parties; and

o 5 who self-identify as unaffiliated with major political parties.

• Prohibit partisan officeholders and candidates, their employees, certain relatives, and lobbyists from serving as commissioners.

• Establish new redistricting criteria including geographically compact and contiguous districts of equal population, reflecting Michigan’s diverse population and communities of interest. Districts shall not provide disproportionate advantage to political parties or candidates.

• Require an appropriation of funds for commission operations and commissioner compensation.

Should this proposal be adopted?

Heard an election ad for this and decided to research it. Sounds like another Rat attempt to control redistricting. I don't believe any Dem would pick "a self-identify as unaffiliated with major political parties" that was not really a Dem.

I’m skeptical, just received my absentee ballot and intend to mail it in today. I would appreciate any feedback regarding the viability/desirability of this proposal. At the moment, I’m leaning no, but just because I’m satisfied with who is now in the MI state legislature.

Hell no!

Like how are 13 random morons any better representative than actual elected reps?

Like who is the idiot that came up with this? The only reason why it is on the ballot here is because the Dems know they arent going to run the state legislator in 2020.

Here is a list of Proposals and pending: https://www.michigan.gov/documents/sos/Bal_Prop_Status_560960_7.pdf

Blatant attempts of Government intervention and takeovers. The only one on the list that looks conservative is to make the legislature part time. To quote:

“No man's life, liberty, or property are safe while the legislature is in session.”

I am voting no. I have hard time believing 5 folks who don’t identify with a party will not be DEMS or Rino’s. I don’t trust that folks will not be paid off to make decision’s on how the lines are drawn.

Then they want a fund set up for this commission and I can see this growing into nothing but a cash hog taking money from other things needed in Michigan.

You’re right. Happened in Arizona. So-called independent voted consistently with the Dems.

I hope you’ll lean to “HELL, NO!” before you mark up your absentee ballot and mail it in.

Whenever I’m in doubt about a proposal, I look to see what organizations/people are for/against and who is donating. That usually sways my vote.

For: Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jennifer Lawrence - that would tell me how to vote.

My favorite answer to redistricting...
Prevent Gerrymandering by establishing a maximum
Circumference to Area ratio to each district,
so the districts approach as close as possible
the shape of a square, instead of an amoeba on crack

THIS IS A BIG FAT NO! I was approached outside my post office months ago to sign a petition to get this on the ballot. The woman said it would be a bi-partisan commission. I surely smelled the rat she was. I would not sign it and said the system we have on place with the majority party doing any redistricting was just fine the way it is. Bottom line the way I see it, Dems are frustrated in our state because the Republicans hold a majority. They have for years and probably will continue. Tough toenails. Win a majority and you can redistrict all you want.

Ohio just went through this. I believe in the old system of 10 year boundaries that get redefined by the victors of the election coincident with the census.

Anyhow, the Ohio method is OK even though I prefer the old system (Gerrymandering and all). The new Ohio system essentially boils down to redistricting every 4 years by the victorious party. the wording is built in consensus, but the fall back is a 4 year redistricting cycle. This is better than non - elected "bipartisan" committees.

I was pretty much thinking that except there should be district modifications conforming to county and city boundaries where possible.

FWIW, MI is not a Rorschach Test of districts if you look at the map other than the carve out for the "Dingell Seat" which his wife now holds, which his dad had, and I think they are over 100 yrs in the family, but let that go.

look at it, it will be Dem ForEvah, however Doc Steele in 2010, gave him a run....

Here's all I need to know:

• Require an appropriation of funds for commission operations and commissioner compensation.

NO

David Commie Bonior was my 10th district Congressman for many years until 2002 when he decided to run for Governor. Two things happened that year, the 10th district was redrawn and Candice Miller ran for Governor and was elected.

While I can't swear to it, I suspect Bonior knew that with the new boundary lines drawn, he lost a large voting block in Mt. Clemens, Clinton Twp., St. Clair Shores, Fraser and Roseville that kept him in office all those years and he wouldn't have stood a chance against Miller......

And for what it's worth, Candice Miller has been one hell of a fine representative of my county in every position she has ever held. She would make a great Governor for this state.......

And Selfridge ANG base owes her a great debt of gratitude........
