Brittney Griner Sounds Off on New G-League Payment For High School Stars [NBA/WNBA]

Brittney Griner has a lot to say about the NBA's new G-League offer to top prospects.

In an Instagram post that she shared on Friday, the Phoenix Mercury center called out the new G-League contracts, which are offering $125,000 to elite prospects who are at least 18 years old but not yet eligible for the NBA draft as an alternative to the NCAA's one-and-done route.

"Must be f------ nice coming out of college getting that," Griner said in the post. "We def didn't see any money like that till we went overseas. AWAY FROM OUT FAMILIES AND LOVED ONES AND HAVE TO PLAY YEAR ROUND."

Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. The only reason Griner and other of her ilk earned a paycheck playing in the NBA is because the NBA subsidies it, including forcing broadcast partners to televise the games. You might be the best woman's player but there is zero chance of you playing against men. A NBA team playing $125 K for an elite 5 star prospect is a bargain. I am still waiting for the lawsuit of WNBA players claiming they deserve equal salaries to the men because they do "the same work".

Hard to imagine anyone paying to see the WNBA.

Even my daughter, who is a college athlete, can’t stand watching women’s sports on TV. Ms. Griner should consider herself blessed for getting paid to play basketball AT ALL!

Nobody wants to see the crappy version of basketball these ladies play. It can be seen by the attendance at their games.

I still say I could find 5 guys in my neighborhood who are in their 30’s and 40’s and go beat a WNBA team.

If a kid who is talented and wants to play basketball wants to sign-up with a minor league team instead of enrolling in a university and pretending to be a student, I don’t have any problem with that. Seems much more honest.

A demo representing 1% - 2.5% of the population buys WNBA tickets at a few dollars a pop.

Low attendance when the ticket prices are comparable to minor league baseball.

Dude.

Yeah. Isn’t this the dude that beat up her wife?

I know. Shocking that there are lesbians in the WNBA!

It’s kind of a dick job. Regular G league folks make like $35K, now all of a sudden they want to take high school kids and pay them $125K. That is a slap in the face.

[ Brittney Griner ]

I don’t know what a Brittney Griner is. Sounds like a food processor.

Women’s sports just aren’t as popular. Attendance and TV ratings are a fraction of the men’s . WNBA attendance and ratings are far below the NBA. So it makes sense the plyers pay is much less as well. What is their beef?

I don’t know much about this topic. Does the G-league or NBA not allow elite prospects if they are female? That certainly sounds like discrimination.

Or is the problem that all those who qualify as elite at the moment (and past) are male? If this is the issue, I’ll join her in the fight if she’ll fight for my rights too. I’m an overweight 5’8” white guy in my 50s, but I want my $125k if we can get them to drop (or redefine) the “elite” part of the deal.

I’m also much better if I can use a smaller ball so maybe we can get the G-league to adopt the WNBA equipment. And if we can get the G-league to switch to a bocce field with bocce equipment and rules I bet I can compete with LeBron - I want my max contract so let’s do it.

I actually prefer the MLB rule; sign out of HS or wait till Jr year of college ends. NBA will never do it. They will pay for one G League but not for the equivalent of an A league, a AA league and a AAA League. Also MiLB has a long history and a fan base. Cannot construct that overnight. So one and dones will still be prevalent.

Volleyball is the only women’s team sport worth watching. Amazing athletes; and overall, the most attractive.

There is no explicit rule about sex in the NBA or G-league. Nancy Lieberman tried out for a NBA team a long time ago.

I will watch women’s figure skating. Women sports that combine athletics with artistry get viewers.
