Bob Golic recounts the 1974 "10-Cent Beer Night" promotion that ended with a riot when the Cleveland Indians hosted the Texas Rangers.
Video Here. Avoid the chit chat and skip to 1:25 in the vid.
Did any FReepers attend the game?
Same here. Dime draws as a special week nights at college in the ‘80’s. Crap beer. But it was cheap crap beer.
An empty gallon wine jug.....wow, apparently security had been taste testing the suds proir to the game for something that big to get in the gate.
10 cent pot night will replace it, with thousands of fans nodding off.
Amateurs.
I worked at the taps one year for the Aber Day Kegger held in Missoula, MT.
1000 KEGS OF BEER
You can fill up any container as long as its not made of glass.
One guy came to my station with a plastic five gallon gas can.
He walked away with five gallons of beer.
Ten cent beer and jackass Billy Martin managing the opponents. Who couldve guessed that wouldnt end well?
Also see Disco Demolition Night.
Tried it again a month later, unbelievable.......only in cleveland.
But when we were reeeeally low on funds, we occasionally would start a fight amongst ourselves (loud with pushing and just enough to not get kicked out) which when everyone in the place jump up and were distracted, another buddy would run behind the crowd and grab a few full, unguarded pitchers off of the tables.
Haha, though one time, the two of us fighting were kicked out by the bouncers (Sr. Linemen from the football team) and our third buddy never came out. So we went to another bar. About an hour later, buddy #3 shows up. He said he couldn't leave without finishing the two pitchers he had acquired. Fun times! :-)
Reminds me of “Kamikaze Halftime” back during UF football games when I was there.
I was just going to say 'did it rival Disco Demolition Night?'
I wasnt at that game, but I can remember going to other games at the old Cleveland stadium and seeing guys hauling up kegs of beer with a rope up over the wall into the bleachers.
Same. I’m 60. We used to go to games in the early 70’s in high school cause we could buy beer easily. Good times.
Hell, in the late 70’s we carried 24- 12 oz cans of beer, poured into a 2.5 gallon Coleman cooler, into Memorial Stadium. You hang out with Wild Bill Hagy in section 34 for 9 innings. What could possibly go wrong?
I went to AppState which was in a dry county. Cheap beer night would quickly become Expensive DUI Night.
BYOB has been the norm in NASCAR forever, you dont see this kinda mess there.....However if you run out a brew at the track is like buying one at an nfl game, $8 or more. Thats usually enough to slow me down.
The 3 worst melees in Major League Baseball in the 70’s were:
- Final home game for the Washington Senators (not even finished, fans ran onto the field and tore it up)
- Ten Cent Beer Night in Cleveland
- Disco Demolition Night in Chicago
Outfielder Rusty Torres played in all three.
“Did any FReepers attend the game?”
Kind of. I was 16, my brother and his buddy took me. We left in about the 6th inning when it was clear things weren’t going to end well.
