I have no issue with "over interpretation" of my dog's intelligence. He is as dumb as they come.

Love cats.

But there is no way they are as smart as dogs.

I have had smart dogs and dumb dogs.

Mixed breed mutts are the smartest.

Purebreds seem to be lacking in brain power................

“He is as dumb as they come.”

But I bet he loves you unconditionally. That makes dogs AND cats better than people in many cases.

My Yardstick:

Does the pet follow instructions?

Dogs = 80%

Cats = 2%

So, I don't much care which "response" THEY consider a sign of intelligence.

"A fox knows many things, but a hedgehog one important thing."
-- Ancient Greek poet Archilochus

Cats just focus on the important stuff.

Intelligence is something that is very difficult to define.

And without a clear definition, it is difficult to compare the intellect of dogs, cats, other animals, and humans.

There are many ways that animals are much smarter than humans.

Who couldn’t see this coming? A month or two ago a study came out with MRI studies of the brains of dogs and cats that showed dogs were at least twice as smart as cats.

Of course some cat lovers were going to band together to make another study showing that wasn’t true.

Next study will show snails, ants, birds, and butterflies are smarter than both dogs and cats.

Moral of the story: The conclusion comes first depending on who is doing the studies. They then fill in the narrative to prove the conclusion. Scientific studies died long ago. It’s all propaganda now. Ever hear of “glowbull” warming?

More likely, we are guilty of over interpretion of scholarship and thinking that the researcher was more intelligent than he really was.

No cat would do that.

Actually, the octopus is the most intelligent in invertebrate. They can show affection and have problem solving skills. That is why I get upset when I read stories about somebody mistreating an octopus.

There are dumb dogs out there, there are some smart cats out there.. but anyone telling me the average cat is as smart as the average dog, is lying through their teeth.

Owned many of both and this isn’t even a contest...

Ah, dogs vs. cats. Smartest? They are of two distinctly different ilks aren’t they? Many dogs irritate me and most cats don’t. Most obsequious and otherwise clingy people irritate me and most independent free spirits don’t. Sloppy people irritate me, fastidious people don’t.

Most dogs do what you want them to do and most cats expect the opposite. If a dog chooses you he is loyal. If a cat chooses you he is hungry.

If a dog gets hungry he will hang around the back door until you feed him. Cats go out and kill something to eat.

Our fur balls will sit on the bench outside the window near my chair in the evening until I turn out the lights then they slowly migrate to their barn. They aren’t hungry.
