A NASA satellite designed to precisely measure changes in Earths ice sheets, glaciers, sea ice and vegetation was launched into polar orbit from California early Saturday.
A Delta 2 rocket carrying ICESat-2 lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base at 6:02 a.m. and headed over the Pacific Ocean.
NASA Earth Science Division director Michael Freilich says that the mission in particular will advance knowledge of how the ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica contribute to sea level rise.
The melt from those ice sheets alone has raised global sea level by more than 1 millimeter (0.04 inch) a year recently, according to NASA. [ ]
Built by Northrop Grumman, ICESat-2 carries a single instrument, a laser altimeter that measures height by determining how long it takes photons to travel from the spacecraft to Earth and back. According to NASA, it will collect more than 250 times as many measurements as the first ICESat.

Gathering propaganda from a polar orbit is what we do now.
This may be CA Gov. Brown’s ‘climate’ satellite ...
What polar ice?
Did NASA ever do anything productive with GoreSat? Or is just sitting in storage at the cost ~$1M/month?

Have no clue, but you might try hunting around on the mega-unfriendly NASA site.
There are many links which are not on NASA but on the JPL site and others. It is very confusing and like I said user unfriendly even to links that do not work or work only if you have specialized software or links that have the same name but go to different places. There are also many images and bits of data which used to be there but have been removed. Why? No Clue.
And we’ve paid millions for those crappy sites.
Maybe NASA will get it “right” this time. Findings probably already written.
The launch, if it ever happens, will arc up, over, and down into the ocean.
You made the big time, Joe
The lack of promotion of the GoreSat's science probably means it's finding the opposite of what Algor's been claiming all these years.
Watched the launch this morning from Mt. Rose, about 317 miles away. Shouldn’t NASA focus on the moon and beyond? Let scientists fly up to arctic, burning fossil fuels to go see the ice for themselves? Despite Prophet Gore, I think there is still ice up there.
Good point! Hadn't thought of that.
No. It’s more accurate, cheaper to use the satellite for area surveys up north and down south around Antarctica.
now, calibrating the satellite depends on the prejudices from the “self-called scientists” who can stay back at home in their air-conditioned studios and labs ....
The lack of promotion of the recent very-expensive CO2 sourcing satellite was because it discovered the highest CO2 source regions were the jungles of Amazon, Congo river and Indonesia-SE Asia. Plus the deserts (Gobi, Sahara, MidEast.
It was NOT what they wanted to see!
*ping*
Thanks fmdj. The climate is 100 percent natural 100 percent of the time.
