A Western tourist has sparked anger after begging for money from locals working at a market in a Thai holiday resort.
The so-called 'begpacker' - calling himself Alex - was seen next to a donation box and signs pleading 'I'm out of savings... please donate for my trip' at Samkong Market on the island of Phuket.
There have been numerous reports of Western travellers begging in the country in the past. But many Thais do not know of the trend and demonstrate their generosity and hospitality by making donations, assuming they are in desperate need of help.

I live in a blue state, and occasionally go into a city that is often mentioned in the same breath as Madison, Ithaca, and Berkeley.
In there, people unashamedly panhandle. For decades, they allowed them to populate a dangerous and extremely busy highway interchange, where they would beg for money.
Very few of these people were physically impaired by an actual disability. I would see them sitting there, in apparent health, a dog by their side, cigarette in their mouth, and a Starbucks cup in their hand.
Sometimes you see what look like High School freshmen sitting there with a cardboard sign saying something like “Please give money for party funds”.
It infuriated me so much I stopped giving anything to anyone, but I have modified my behavior to give money to people actually missing a limb.
Nothing makes me angrier than an able-bodied person begging for money. I would feel quite differently if there were a depression, but there isn’t.
And to go overseas and beg for money? I might actually deliver a swift kick.
What pathetic losers. Go get jobs and finance your own travels.

Back before Jimmy Kimmel was castrated by ABC, The Man Show I think once did a piece where they interviewed a bunch of pan handlers to see how much money they really earn. I think the average at the time was about 35k/yr, which is both astounding and depressing.
Expel them from country
