The granting or withholding of that approval is a powerful lever over our lives.
Do you have permit for that? If you want to keep that permit, you'd better do as you're told.
Increasingly, that's the theme of modern America. More and more of what we do is dependent on permission from the government. That permission, unsurprisingly, is contingent on keeping government officials happy. Rub those officials the wrong way and they'll strip you of permission to travel the roads, leave the country, or even make a living.
That's not a recipe for a free country.
In February of this year, the IRS began sending the U.S. State Department lists of Americans who have a seriously delinquent tax debt, so that these individuals can be denied the right to travel overseas.

I had a liberal neighbor for years that, when she saw me doing something would ask “did the government let you do that?”
Which is to say that compulsive government busybodies are everywhere these days.
A recurring trend lately is for police to demand ‘permits’ from anyone taking pictures or video in public as if that isn’t a protect First Amendment right.
We need Regulatory Release!
Surprised reason.com is allowed on FR
On Mercer Island, in Washington State, you can’t cut down a tree without the city’s permission. So a friend of mine who lives there, Spike one of his own free so it would die. After it died, he went to cut it down at a neighbor saw him doing it. She told him that if he could his tree down she was going to call the police. His response was basically, “good luck with that. The tree is dead.”
It’s kind of sad that a fascist government reducesu us to sort of activity.
Something about sending hither swarms of officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance comes to mind.
“I had a liberal neighbor”
You a national socialist neighbor.
Mao started the Cultural Revolution because he feared the bureaucracy would strangle China. That’s what is happening here.

>> “You a national socialist neighbor.” <<
Or worse.
Truly the left is an attack against all liberty.
They are not “liberal,” they are fascist.

My late father-in-law was a village official in Northern Illinois. He simply refused to believe that we didn’t need a building permit/inspectors to add on to our house. “How will the assessor know to charge more taxes?”, he wanted to know.
He also couldn’t believe that we didn’t have zoning in the county. “You mean someone can build anything he wants?”. “Yep”, I told him.
I had a man/wife combo and don’t miss either of them.
Every so often, I go through the old neighborhood and they have signs up for the dims they support and other lost causes.
This is an absolutely delightful movie about the frustrations of building permits.

“How will the appraiser know how much to value the home for?”
“How will the insurance adjuster know how much to value the home for?”
“How does a potential buyer know if the home has been built sturdily and to a building code?”
“How does the Fire Dept. know if you haven’t built a fire trap that will kill the occupants and burn down the neighborhood?”
You must live in heaven.
#1 Hell have to come out and appraise.
#2 We have to tell/show them what we have
#3 Theyll have to look it over/hire an inspector
#4 They dont. But we are living in the country so any defects in our home only threaten us.
I know it is hard to believe. But such FreeAmerican places still exist.
Think The Money Pit. Very funny movie and in my 30+ years of experience can be very true. Lots of homes in Maui and the other islands were built before any permit system existed.
Try to get a loan or insurance - haha!
Watched a couple of demos - one swipe with a backhoe and down it went.
Good luck with all that!
Did he stop to think that maybe what the assessor didn’t know wouldn’t hurt him? Like most everywhere, getting a permit/inspector for a building project is all about the taxing authority getting their pound of flesh. Sometimes it can be a very small project. Are there any places left in this country where you can build something without telling the world?
