Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democratic Socialists of America member who won a Democratic primary victory this week in New York's 14th Congressional District, failed to clearly explain democratic socialism on Friday.
Ocasio-Cortez joined "The View" panel where Meghan McCain asked about her self-described Democratic socialist views.
The candidate has been at the center of attention since her upset in Tuesday's primary against incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley (D., N.Y.), a 10-term congressman and member of the Democratic leadership in the House of Representatives. Ocasio-Cortez is known for being one of the most left-leaning candidates in the 2018 midterm elections.
"You consider yourself a Democratic socialist like Bernie Sanders, correct?" McCain asked, to Ocasio-Cortez's agreement.
McCain then asked about the split within the Democratic Party between those who hold views similar to her and those more in-line with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.).
"Do you think that the future of the Democratic Party is socialism?" McCain asked.
Ocasio-Cortez first tried to argue there was a significant difference between her beliefs and socialism.
"First of all, there's a huge difference between socialism and Democratic socialism," Ocasio-Cortez said. "Democratic socialism, and really what that boils down to me, is the basic belief that I believe that in a moral and wealthy America and a moral and modern America, no person should be too poor to live in this country."
"That's what I believe. I can understand that there may be some divisions. You know, I don't think people wake up in the morning and say, I'm a capitalist!" she added.
Ocasio-Cortez went on to say she believes the Democratic Party's future is about the "working class." However, she did not go into any policy specifics on the "huge difference" between Democratic socialism and socialism.
Democratic socialism is Venezuala ten years ago. Socialism is Venezuala today.
All one really needs to know is that Lenin’s Communist Party of the Soviet Union went under a different name before the Bolshevik Revolution: the Social Democratic Labor Party of Russia.
Follow up question (as if the media ever asked those of leftists unless the question had been requested when setting up the interview): Since you favor the working class, how do you feel about deporting illegals who lower wages for our working class? Since you favor the working class, how do you feel about deporting illegals who add to class sizes in schools that are trying to educate American children in the working class?
There is no policy stance more anti-working-class than the globalist mass importation of illegal low-wage workers and their children.
It’s only socialism when someone else does it and fails.
When they do it, it’s ok because they’re smart and know how to do it right.
Yeah....riiiiiggggght. Here’s hoping beyond hope that her republican challenger pulls off a huge upset...just like she did. Not likely...but hoping.
Do Republicans have a shot at picking up this seat?
What it means is No Toilet Paper.
Probably everyone knows that “socialism” doesn’t work. So, we need new and improved socialism, now with 40% less corruption. Thus we have “democratic socialism.” This is a marketing term.
in NY? Nope-
Just read what she said...She doesn’t make any sense at all.
Democratic Socialism is just socialism with a badly drawn smiley face.
Good one!
Democratic Socialism is when you pretend that you have say in government.
She has a problem differentiating between a bus schedule and a train schedule.
“Socialism is Communism sold by the glass” - P J O’Rourke
As in, do I vote for Hillary or Bernie for my free stuff?
Straight socialism: The government takes your money and you don't have a say in who takes it or how much they take or how they'll spend it.
As in, Maduro is the dictator of Venezuela and there is no free stuff. Actually, there's no stuff at all.
A distinction without a difference.
Let me help:
Socialism: You have two cows. A commissar takes one at random and gives it to someone else. But it doesn’t matter because the state takes all the milk anyway.
Democratic Socialism: You have two cows. The Central Committee votes on which cow you must give it to someone else. But again it doesn’t matter because the state takes all the milk anyway.
“Democratic socialism is Venezuala ten years ago. Socialism is Venezuala today.”
That’s a pretty fair statement. Sadly, Venezuela used to be one of the wealthiest countries in South America until socialism stuck it’s finger into it and messed up the oil industry money machine.
They’re going to put up there, every chance they get because she’s young, is appealing to the college kid-hipster-inner city living-liberal, and she is good looking. In about 6-7 months she will be living in DC. Where she will be exposed to the scumiest people on the planet, in every way. She’ll be getting a lot of air time and be thrown softball questions and be there just to look pretty. But she’s going to want to be taken seriously. Kamala Harris is going to get pissed because she’s stealing some camera time. Going to be quite the cat fight.
On top of all that, she’ll be quickly seduced by all the power players, K Street and Wall St. She’ll get knee deep in it and be consumed by it.
Then, not one of her policies will even get a glance and that will enrage her even more as she falls flat on her face.
Socialism introduced democratically is “Democratic Socialism”. Most people can easily be seduced by the promise of “Vote for me and I’ll make all those rich folks share the wealth”.
Maintaining socialism once the people have figured out what it really means can only be achieved by force, at which point it is no longer democratic and becomes dictatorial.
