GOOCHLAND COUNTY, Va. -- The FBI is now investigating after a woman shot a New Zealand man outside her Goochland County home Friday afternoon.
Troy Skinner, 25, flew to Virginia to meet the woman's teenage daughter after the two chatted online using Discord, a service popular among gamers, the Goochland County Sheriff said.
The 14-year-old girl's mother shot Skinner when he attempted to break into the family's home in the Holland Hills community, the sheriff said.
"He was not invited here, he was not expected here, he had been told in the past that the daughter no longer wished to communicate with him," Goochland Sheriff Jim Agnew said.

Too bad online dating sites don’t issue Public Safety Alerts to train people not to give out personal information.

She was on a gaming site not a dating site! She told him to leave her alone and he kept changing names/id’s to find her.
This time I’m on her side it’s a shame she can’t play a stupid internet video game without some sicko trying to chase her down.
This is the same as in the old days where we had arcades down at the mall and some sleeze would hang out and try to pick up kids playing those games. You know the ones, where you had to have a pocket of quarters to play.
Only now this is the internet and they stop at nothing to come get your kids, they come right to your house. In the old days they never would have been this aggressive.

I agree, it’s a shame she cannot play on those gaming sites like the boys or other people do. Some things still haven’t changed. I’m guessing the gamers have a choice to see each other while they are engaged in a game together. Even a still shot Face Photo Avatar would excite the wrong kind of character to be inappropriate. Young girls still must be more careful than boys.
It would not surprise me if one of these game producers got sued as being somehow responsible for facilitating such encounters.
That wouldn’t be fair, seeming to be a matter of freely assumed risk by the gamer. Such lawsuits could still end in very expensive cash settlements.
It would have been happier if she actually killed the stalker
mostly agree with you, but the girl still had the choice to stop playing the online game. OR her mom if she knew could have told her to stop playing the game.
There were other options than to just keep playing the game being harrassed/stalked and let it escalate more as they did.
If someone is harrassing, or seems mentally out of sorts, bullying etc, it’s up to the rational, sane person to make adjustments. Stupid to expect she could just keep playing the game and some how it would all work out ok. She’s got an addiction if she couldn’t or wouldn’t stop for her own sake.
Yes the man was wrong or sick and did not understand better, but 14yr old is old enough to know better as is mom. The man being killed didn’t have to happen and I hope they actually learn their part in this happening and change their ways too.
If he is taking psycho-pharm meds, the kind, dosage and out patient records (head shrink reports) should be reviewed.
