Holy month of Ramadan begins for millions of Muslims

Millions of Muslims have begun the fasting month of Ramadan.

The faithful in Turkey, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia and others prayed the holy month's first taraweeh, a special nightly prayer and one of the hallmarks of Ramadan, on Tuesday.

The Ramadan fast, in which food and even water is prohibited, falls on especially long summer days this year for Muslims in the Northern Hemisphere. For Muslims who live in regions where Islam is not the dominant religion, challenging fasts are believed to come with greater blessings.

The Islamic is a pure lunar with no adjustments for the difference between the lunar year and the solar year. So Islamic holidays can fall during any part of the solar year. Ramadan is based on observing a new moon with no use of astronomical calculations. So the start is just announced by the appropriate authorities. There is no accommodation for latitude for day time fasting. Some Muslim living in Alaska might have to fast for 20 hours a day for a month. Saudi Arabia located within the tropical latitudes does not experience such swings in daylight hours.

I live within a few blocks of the home where a young Muslim lived who was convicted on a guilty plea of plotting to blow up my local mall.

I live in an area that houses 1/4 of all U.S. Muslims so telling me that only 10-20% approve of killing me gives very little comfort.
