Seattle City Council votes 9-0 for scaled-down head tax on large employers

After a weekend of high-stakes negotiations between Seattle City Council members and Mayor Jenny Durkan, the council voted unanimously Monday to tax the city’s largest employers to help address homelessness.

Starting next year, the tax will be $275 per employee, per year on for-profit companies that gross at least $20 million per year in the city — down from a $500-per-head proposal that Durkan threatened to veto.

Having paused construction planning on an office tower over the larger proposal, Amazon now will move ahead with it, a spokesman said after the vote. But the company’s plans to occupy a skyscraper under construction are still up the air, he said.

“We are disappointed by today’s City Council decision to introduce a tax on jobs,” spokesman Drew Herdener said in a statement

I like this idea. Finish it and never move in. Rent out the office space. Find a new city.

They’ll end up going Galt. Odd thing is, I can almost see these types of innovators creating a “Galt’s Gulch” somewhere. Hmm - perhaps it will be hidden within a virtual world.

Detroit is literally returning back to the forest it once was as socialist politics make it harder and harder for people to actually live there. In spite of leftists holding the commanding heights of propaganda in the culture people still manage to become conservative because of outcomes like Detroit.

So Seattle puts a head tax on large employers..to do what? Provide homes for the homeless.

Do ya think the $15 minimum wage had somehing to do with that with fewer emplyment opportunities for low wage workers?

It must be something in the water.

So with the increased homelessness, due to increased already high taxes, Seattle increases taxes on the working even more.

Cesspool of Left lunacy.

Besides, the problem in the Seattle area is socialists and communists, even more so than the forever-present Democrats.

You are repeating yourself. There is no daylight between the groups you listed.

Finish it...

Install no utilities...

Tell the homeless to move in...

Problem solved.

If you do the math on Amazon warehouse scale thats 1500 employees, a third of a million dollars taken from those employees paychecks and their customers. Those employees start at just over 11 bucks an hour. They cannot afford micro brews.

Oh, did you think Bezos was going to pay it?

“Were I advising street people in the Pac NW, I’d say “Get a bus ticket to Seattle. They have big bucks waiting for you!”

I’m hoping all the homeless and homeless wannabes migrate to San Francisco or Seattle. All the illegals too.....

Amazon is not stupid. I have observed that in communities that try to milk them they will not build any more. In communities that are grateful for the flood of jobs, more and more facilities pop up.

There are many styles of Amazon fulfillment centers. You get one, its a test, you get 4, you passed the test.

Seattle failed, those jobs will go elsewhere. You drop 5000 jobs from 11 - 17 bucks and hour for unskilled labor on a town and you get prosperity.

Of course it will. It won’t raise the expected revenue and they will be forced to increase the rate. Liberal Logic 101

Winner, Winner...Chicken Dinner. You just made my point.

Bezos, the $100 BILLION Social Justice Warrior, that is taking over the world, the NEW LIBERAL KING, taking advantage of the very workers, he and the Left are supposed to care so much about. Workers or the world Unite. Unless you work for Amazon, in one of his wharehouses, where you’re forced to piss in a bottle.

However, this tax applies to the workers in Seattle. Where his corporate officers are. All the, Hipster Techies and Managers that he has working for him, not the grunts filling orders in a warehouse. Those warehouses are in rural areas, where they have low property taxes and Amazon was able to dupe the local governments into giving him the land for free, because of all the jobs that he’s going to bring.

Remember, to get cities competing for his, H2, he promised thousands of jobs w/ everyone making over $100,000 or more.

Being the SJW that he ‘says’ he is, he should be giving money to the Seattle and building homes for all the homeless. Instead, he threatens to take his toys and go home. Just like any good liberal.

That’s the way the Left works. They wanted $500 per head but compromised and took a “cut” of $225 per head. They’ll decry it as a loss to “mean” businesses even though this bogus tax passed.

These lunatics are awarding homelessness. Nothing these “Progressives” do is useful or helpful.Im amazed how companies still do business in that cesspool.

But the jobs in downtown Seattle aren’t the warehouse/fulfillment center jobs, I think you’re talking about. Seattle is the corporate nerve center, the hipster techie liberals and management.

Those $11-17/hr jobs are on the outskirts of major cities or in the country, where land is cheap, property taxes low and a job at that pay rate is considered a really good job.

The urban hubs, like Amazon HQ in Seattle, are filled with all the “do good - feel good - liberals”. The ones that scream from the rooftops about equality and opportunity and every other liberal agenda item they can think of.

They’d just need to build a building outside city limits. Also some companies will split their employees and put them under a new named company under the same umbrella of course. I bet not one company pays this tax after all is said and done.
