In a surprise move, the U.S. Army is asking industry for ideas for a new submachine gun. The last time the Army adopted a submachine gun was in 1943. Its not clear why the Army wants a new subgun but it likely has to do with the service's eventual adoption of a new rifle caliber and new assault rifle.
Submachine guns were developed during the World War I as an alternative to bulky, slow-firing bolt action rifles. Short and firing pistol caliber ammunition, they were ideal weapons for assault troops clearing narrow trenches of enemy troops. The U.S. Army went into World War II with the M1928A1 Thompson submachine gun, which fired the same .45 ACP round as the M1911A1 pistol. Towards the end of the war the Thompson was supplemented by the M3 Grease Gun, also in .45 ACP.

I’m sure you’ll find more than a few MP5s in certain Special Forces’ weapons lockers.
A friend used a recaptured M3 grease gun in Vietnam.
Me want.
I got to fire one of those a few years back (grease gun)...it was interesting.
Holding it, the construction didn’t seem all that impressive to me, but it was firing it that was most interesting...the rate of fire seemed very slow, but then I again, I had the opportunity to fire a SAW the same day, so just about anything is slow in comparison to THAT!
But I think having .45 slugs going downrange, albeit at a slower rate, far makes up for it...that can’t be good to be on the receiving end of that.
I got to fire a Thompson...that was a hoot.
I had automatic weapons envy after that!
Got about $30,000? Thanks to the republicans full auto is priced beyond most of us and limited to designs in production prior to 1986
Looks like popular mechanics doesn't like adblocker
This is one likely candidate:

I packed a Thompson or a Grease Gun on occasion while in Vietnam. Also, had a selector switch on my issue M-14.
“Keep the change, you filthy Animal!”
Wrong. That amendment to the Firearm Owners Protection Act was passed on a voice vote over Republican objections, by a Democrat controlled congress.
It is really reliable, and easy to break down and clean. It is pretty accurate. I have a .40 cal at work and prefer my M-4 with a 10 barrel. Spare mag carriage and left handed issues are my biggest complaints.
Lol. Full auto on an M14 was one hell of a thing.
Why 90 buy the FN P90?Its a compact point and shoot weapon.
H&K MP5/40. Or MP5/10.
Its already out there
HK MP7 suppressed is a very decent weapon too...
