A Republican State Representative from Arizona may have set an internet record; going from total obliviousness to full blown furry in under 24 hours. Kelly Townsend, a Representative for Arizona's 16th District since 2013 became entangled in a twitter debate regarding socialism and public education (Arizona public school teachers have been striking recently), when a twitter user named @andreuswolf called her out for getting "logically destroyed by a furry". In what may go down as the defining moment of her political career, Townsend decided to ask "please educate me as to what a furry is.". The fun began immediately.

The Twitter thread is an absolute riot! (And occasionally NSFW)

Ha! So she got schooled and stayed for it. I like it. Now she has a cool fursona and porn to go along with (no doubt the animations will grow in time—albeit for the lefties abused negatively and she demeaned as is their way). She held her own on this with class. She schooled everyone back with respect.
How cute is the lioness? The graphic artist did a great job and they’ll get future work from this for sure.
So what is it?
“In what may go down as the defining moment of her political career...”
What wishful thinking Democrat wrote this?
People who like to dress up in animal costumes. I have friends who are into this.
I would DEFINITELY vote for someone that didn’t know what a furry is! I WISH I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT A FURRY IS.
More infantilism.
I often wonder what returning soldiers think when they see the kind of lost, pathetic, fairty-tale fairies for whom they have been risking life and limb.
I occasionally like to wear a tail myself. Attaches to my belt.
Partly to be weird.
Partly because people don’t follow me around when I do.
Not many people want to be accused of literally “chasing some tail”.
There are a LOT of LOST people in this country. Hopefully those that have served and come back can see that the majority are not lost and appreciate them. That’s what I hope.
I am both, to whatever extent, as you’ll notice by my previous post.
Interests range all over.
Politicians are the ones that give me pause.
“So what is it?”
Just looked it up, reading the article in the Phoenix New Times:
“A furry, for the uninitiated, is a member of an internet-fueled subculture centered around an obsession with anthropomorphic animal characters. Some furries take part in what’s known as “yiffing” having sex while dressed in a fursuit but others have a totally PG, nonsexual interest in cartoon animals.”
Now I need to figure out how to un-learn it. Just another sign of a culture that rejects reality. Waiting to hear these people need separate bathrooms...
Why would politicians display any courage, honesty or acumen when the people they represent devote their time to safe zones, cry rooms, multi-sex bathrooms and furry costumes...
I can’t tell if you are saying you are both a soldier and a furry, or a fairy and a furry...but if it is the former I really can’t understand how you wouldn’t be shocked and disillusioned at the goofballs who live under protection of heroes like you and have no idea of the service and safety you provide for them.
Instead they check out by becoming playtime bears and kitties and such. Yipes!!
Uh huh.
I read Playbody for the articles.

Earliest online cite I could find (Pittsburgh Press, 1961):
The whole business started innocently on Die Press TV page recently with a gag about a space ship landing on Mars. The Martians proved to be fuzzy little creatures, led by one with a head like a hypodermic needle. He was known to the Martians as “The furry with the syringe on top.”
https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/147796154/
I recall hearing a version of the joke where the furry is a cat or dog having escaped from the office with the hypodermic needle still in its back.
Is Townsend’s opponent a furry then?
