ONE of Britains oldest people has turned 110, saying her long life is thanks to friends...and onions. Daisy Bastin puts her longevity down to the combination, saying: I am very lucky in my life to have had such loyal friends and to still be in good health.
She added home cooking with fresh onions had helped too.
She said: They keep me going. Theyre good for the skin too.
Mrs Bastin, of Glastonbury, Somerset, was born on May 3, 1908, in Devon as one of seven children.
She met her husband Alf in 1933 and they were happily married for 50 years.
They had a son, whom she also outlived.
Mrs Bastin said: I always loved to go dancing with my husband and have fond memories of a trip up to Blackpool we would take every year with some friends to dance.
Her father, husband and son all served in the Armed Forces and Daisy has clear memories of the First and Second World Wars.
She said: My father and my husband fought in the great wars and both of them were badly injured but they both survived.
I didnt see my father for a while after he had gone missing and we thought he was dead.
I remember my mother was so relieved when he came home.
My husband was injured in the Second World War quite badly and I helped care for him every day when he got back.
The secret to a long life is to just be happy and enjoy your time with friends.
I have great support from my friends and carers who come into my home and they have helped me to live a long and happy life.

With so much sludge in the news, thanks for posting a nice story.
Sweet.
Whatever super old people liked or did a lot, they credit. Onions, whisky, whatever.
....and this one old guy ate two dozen boiled eggs a day.......
Well, I’m just a youngster of 93, and I still walk every day and I still drive. The car is going to die before I do.
She agrees w/Dr Fuhrman, the guy on PBS who always says to get your G-BOMBS everyday.
Greens
Beans
Onions
Mushrooms
Berries
Seeds
I wore one on my belt back when I was young
She looks like a happy person, and I think that’s the key.
Maybe the smell of onions kept others away, and hence less exposure to germs?
It was the style back then.................
Personally, I love the smell of onions!...................
Not to mention the “sounds”!
Peruvian sweet onions! Mmmm, you can eat them like an apple.
My grandfather smoked a cigar or four every day up until he was in his 80s. He lived to be 94.
An old lady?
We credit beer and onions for my grandpas long life. For generations all the men in his family died before age 70. He lived to be 93.
As a teen Id almost gag watching him prepare and eat onion sandwiches: wonder bread, thick layer of margarine, then raw onion slices. Hed crunch away on it, happy as a clam.
