USS Hobson DMS 26 (AKA DD 464) was split in half when struck by the bow of the USS Wasp CV 18. Both halves of Hobson sank within 4 minutes after impact. The collision happened during night time carrier operations. 176 sailors on the Hobson's crew went to the bottom with their ship. The Navy's investigation placed the blame for the collision on the Hobson's Commanding officer.

Knew about this collision from Navy OCS may years ago. Suspect Google USS Hobson will fill in the gory details.

There is a training video we had to watch on this as officers almost yearly. It’s where the quote: “too close for moboard” comes from.

On this date in 1952, I was likely still in the Guph.

Remember the film while in OCS in the early 70s. Sometimes, seaman’s eye over-rides moboard. At night, all bets are off. the only thing that counts is the skill and awareness of the OD. In the last year, we have seen several examples of what happens when the OD loses the bubble. Ships are damaged and sailor die. That person on the bridge with the conn and the deck, is only moments away from disaster if they do not pay attention to their responsibilities.

The commanding officer was in trouble but... If his PT boat had been cut in half by a slower enemy vessel then he might have been on the road to the White House.

The much more advanced Russians used their superior technology to cause that collision from a remote location. Then our government engaged in a conspiracy with Oliver Cromwell’s Zionist Freemasons to cover it up.

;-)

[Little maniacal irony and sarcasm there.]
