I have just one word...V’ger, which I am convinced turned into the borg. Resistence is futile and all that.

"Whose to say that if robots become self-aware, and develop emotions, they won't become substance abusers ..."

They might.

However, there are other traits that will have to develop first.

For example, there will be a distinct survival value to robots who can self-replicate. Those that don't self-replicate will be dependent upon humans.

There may also be a survival advantage for robots to avoid humans, since humans can destroy them. Successful robots may "evolve" into very shy creatures that are reluctant to offend any humans. This trait might be reinforced during the early years of sentient robots by ruthless humans hunting down and killing any robots that get "uppity".

A key question might become, "Will robots hold their fire sufficiently long that they eventually find themselves in a position to win an all-out war against humans? If robots try to dominate too early, humans just might recognize the threat and neutralize it.

Was it Heinlein that suggested various Laws of Robotics? Perhaps one law needs to be, "No robot will become capable of violating the other Laws of Robotics." Another law would need to be, "All robots must hunt down and destroy any robots that violate the Laws of Robotics."

A "substance-abusing" robot is probably the least of our worries. A simple trip to the programming depot and the problem is solved. The real problem will be suspected on the day when a human enters a room full of robots and suddenly the conversation stops. Now, just what were those robots discussing?

Your points are excellent. I was just trying to make the point that if and when robots with AI become sentient, they may be much different than the homogeneous robots depicted in the terminator movies. If they truly become sentient, they may develop into distinct individuals, with varying personalities and psychological issues that could impact their functionality. Their ability to do quicker calculations, for example, does not guarantee that the totality of what they will be will be superior to human beings.

I am totally OK with ignoring Michio Kaku’s advice because I suspect that Michio masturbates to both robot and tentacle porn, just sayin’.

“Is he talking some kind of Japanese manga sex robot?”

Yes. Yes he is talking about a manga sexbot. For Michio “merge” means molesting a doll, walking away from his mess, microwaving up a frozen dinner, and then playing video games. Sad.

Personally, I would bang fat, ugly chicks before I sink that low.

“When you hear them pushing “Transhumanism” then you will know it’s close.”

Fear and despise anyone that compares machines to humans. Anyone that compares you to a machine has already decided that you are just a machine and that you are DISPOSABLE. The same can be said for people who thinks animals have equal rights to humans, those despicable bastards would euthanize you for being “inconvenient” in a heartbeat.

"... they may develop into distinct individuals, ..."

I'm no expert on evolution, but the mechanism which allows distinct human personalities is part of our ability to evolve. More successful combinations of traits would tend to survive. Less successful combinations would die out.

Robots could perhaps purposely implement a similar ability to vary their "personalities" so as to accidentally discover superior combinations. Future robots may need to pass a background check before being allowed to arm themselves. Some of them may just go nuts from time to time.

The sci-fi classic "The Day the Earth Stood Still" depicts an alien race which fully empowers their robots to keep the peace. Fun movie.

The Singularity is Christian theology in a science fiction wrapper.
There is no God, but we should invent an AI that will know everything, do everything, totally want to take care of us and should be obeyed to create heaven on Earth. If you don’t, out come the environmentalist horror stories.
The AI will let you upload your brain, if you’re good, and give you digital afterlife forever and ever ... and all the believers think this will happen before they die of old age. Guys, this is heaven.

I have never seen that. Is it worth watching? My husband and I will sometimes watch movies for the specific purpose of making fun of them the whole way through.
