What We Knew: Everyday Life in Nazi Germany
Archive.org ^ | 2005 | Eric A. Johnson, Karl-Heinz Reuband

Posted on 03/14/2018 10:50:26 AM PDT by GoldenState_Rose

Difficult as it is to fathom, given most people's conception of dictatorship, most Germans appear to have led happy, productive, even normal lives in the Third Reich. This indicates that a dictatorship can enjoy widespread popularity among the majority even while committing unspeakable crimes against minorities and others.

The horrors of the Nazi regime and the Holocaust still present some of the most disturbing questions in modern history: Why did Hitler’s party appeal to millions of Germans, and how entrenched was anti- Semitism among the population? How could anyone claim, after the war, that the genocide of Europe’s Jews was a secret? Did ordinary non-Jewish Germans live in fear of the Nazi state? In this unprecedented firsthand analysis of daily life as experienced in the Third Reich, What We Knew offers definitive and surprising answers to these crucial questions.

Combining the expertise of Eric A. Johnson, an American historian, and Karl-Heinz Reuband, a German sociologist, What We Knew is the most startling oral history yet of everyday life in the Third Reich, drawing on gripping interviews as well as a unique survey of four thousand people, both German Jews and non-Jewish Germans.

Someone posted something yesterday that some teenage relative knew nothing of the hohcaust and when informed appeared to not care either. Sad commentary.

My mother grew up in Nazi Germany and while she didn’t suffer as many did, her Father warned her to keep her mouth shut while in a public place. Say nothing.

“her Father warned her to keep her mouth shut while in a public place. Say nothing.”

We are rapidly getting there.

The Nazis had wide appeal outside of Germany too. Most of South America, Mussulmen nations, Britain and even here in the USA. Many DemonRat areas held large Nazi rallies such as Chicago and New York city. Papa Kennedy was a supporter.

The US has been marching toward this future. The people going into the US camps are not likely to be Jews, but the Left wants people in the camps. They want a reduced population. They consider many people to be Undesirables.

The schools teach Marxism (usually to praise it, but even when they point out problems: they still teach Marxism). But what we do NOT teach is Fascism. Which is a major reason why we live in a fascist country today. The speech restrictions, the controls on media, the one-party system, the government corruption. This is Fascism without the War and without the Genocide.

Trump has at least stopped the march for now, but we are in great danger and most people in this country cannot recognize it. They have no idea what Fascism is. Well, it’s this.

When I went to college in 1961, my father, who worked for the Federal government, told me I could join any group, but to never sign a membership list.

“Well, it’s this.”

You are so correct.

People think Fascism only exits if there are swastikas and funny mustaches.

Until the past couple decades, the great events and government policies in most nations didn’t really impact people who lived outside of the cities. Even in a country like Nazi Germany. With modern technology, the government is more and more able to reach more citizens in non-urban areas. That’s not a good thing.

Life was good*.

* that is if you were not on Himmler’s shit list, or of you were not a Jew, or a gypsy, or a homosexual, or disabled, or a dissenter, or a Christian, or somebody who voted communist, even once, or were a gun owner, or Polish, Russian, French, Chezch, or Belgian, or Dutch, or a Luxembourger, etc, etc.

Otherwise, yep, life was good

Most people in history lived under dictators, kings, emperors, queens, chieftains, strongmen, sheiks and other types of rulers. Few lived in democracies.

Fascism is an economic system based in part on dirigisme.

The media-cultural narrative is that fascism is primarily about thuggery when any system can be about thuggery.

In economic fascism the government tells private enterprise what to produce (or not) and then takes a share of the profits as if it were a shareholder.

This happens in the USA quite a bit and Obama was very much in favor of it.

Truth be told, the USA is a quasi-fascist state.

And our Constitution never meant to allow the government to do this.

The book “The Bad War” The truth never taught about War World II, by M.S. King is an eye opening book about the second great war. There are a good amount of historical events lead up to Germany’s invasion of Poland. However, what is missing most if not from all accounts from the victor’s perspective...basically our understanding... is the outright villainy and treachery of the Britain, France, FDR and the rest of the global cabal of devious cowards. Germany was abused and tricked into both wars. Donald Trump, like Franco, Like Hitler, like Mussolini is a Nationalist 1st. Something the Globalists hate. However, The scum sucking Globalists are devious creatures and will end up destroying the USA with Trump at the helm.

My mothers family lived inGermany during the war and all was relatively normal until my grandfather said something negative about the Nazi party at work. A family friend ran to my grandmothers house to tell her that something was wrong. By the time she got to his workplace he had already been hauled off by the police and spent the rest of the war 1944-45 in a slave labor camp.

My mom vaguely remembered the police searching their house regularly and the once friendly neighbors being afraid to talk to my grandmother or her daughters.

Once the jews and gypsies and homos and mentally ill were murdered the police state would have found other “dangers” until no one was left.

On normal life in a dictatorship...

I found Krzysztof Kieslowski fascinating on the subject of the censorship of his movies in Communist Poland. We would see censorship as the end of the world, but he had a very realistic attitude towards the censors (eventually he made his THREE COLOURS trilogy in France, unfettered).

Not sure if the wave of censorship heading towards us would be reasonable AT ALL, but eventually extremes die down and people have to live normal lives, or no one has a life.
