Trump, citing ‘evil massacre’ in Florida, starts talking about gun control

President Trump on Tuesday signaled an openness to modest gun-control measures following what he called an “evil massacre” at a South Florida high school last week that left 17 dead and prompted passionate calls from teenagers for reform.

Trump directed the Justice Department to draft a ban on devices known as “bump stocks,” molded pieces of plastic or metal that can attach to a legal semiautomatic gun and allow it to fire up to 100 rounds in seven seconds, similar to an illegal machine gun.

In private, he has indicated that he might do more, telling advisers and friends in recent days that he is determined to push for some sort of gun-control legislation, according to people familiar with the conversations.

In one such discussion, during dinner with television commentator Geraldo Rivera at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, the president listened with interest as Rivera suggested raising the minimum age at which a person could buy a semiautomatic weapon from 18 to 21. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Tuesday that the idea is “on the table for us to discuss.”

So far, Trump’s public stances have not crossed the agenda of the powerful pro-gun-rights National Rifle Association, which endorsed him during the 2016 Republican primary and spent more than $30 million supporting his candidacy and attacking his opponent in the general election, Hillary Clinton. But behind the scenes, Trump is floating ideas that could put him at odds with the NRA.

The NRA did not respond Tuesday to a request for comment.

Trump’s attempt at a new tone on the gun issue comes as the politics surrounding the issue appear to be changing in the wake of the shooting last week in Parkland, Fla.

I have to say, I think you are correct. Soros and cronies are willing to do anything to disarm Am. citizens and leave us at the mercy of the gangs. And then when we are all as beleaguered as Chicago, call in the UN to finish us all.

That is an excellent idea, Vince.

Many of these shooters have been on dangerous prescription drugs of one kind or another.

President trump is jeopardizing his entire presidency with this announcement. I have supported the president since before he even announced he was a candidate but this is not what I voted for. Yes he is extremely good at politics and this could be a head fake but in my opinion even a head fake along these lines could lose the majority in the midterms and this party will be over before it even got started. The reality is Jeff Sessions and the DOJ can do NOTHING legal to stop the sale of these "devices" because quite simply they are not illegal per the LAW. Any federal regulations as such can immediately be challenged in court and if we are a nation of laws they will be thrown out.

Before uninformed among us jump in saying bump stocks are stupid I want to point out he also said "ALL DEVICES" that turn legal weapons into machine guns. First no device turns a firearm into a machine gun that is not already covered and highly regulated by the NFA. The reason we have legal other devices is precisely because they DO NOT turn a semi auto into a machine gun, hence they are legal.

So what we are really talking about is regulation on SHOOTING FAST. This would include light triggers made for precision shooting. Adjustable triggers or even triggers that have a pull weight of less than 20lbs for example which would make it impossible to fire quickly. Bump stocks, binary triggers, trigger cranks, very light weight target triggers, experienced shooters with lighting fast fingers DO NOT PER THE LETTER OF THE LAW turn a semi auto into a machine gun. This is the reason the BATF's hands are tied and MUST approve them and cannot regulate them.

The President needs to meet with Sessions and make an announcement that the LAW would need to be changed in order to regulate any of these devices and advise he does not support such law as it violates the second amendment.

In my opinion this could spell the end of the Trump presidency if some kind of onerous unconstitutional regulation comes out of this administration. The president will lose a major portion of his base and even those that are on the fence will begin to lose faith. The mid terms are coming. The second amendment is as sacred as the first and cannot be bargained with in any way without dire consequences.

I’m for raising the age on Ar-15 and the like to 21 yrs. No reason for a kid to have such a weapon if he’s a student at home or in school.

Sit tight you jumped too soon.....he’ll play this like DACA or close too.....

I have no problem with tighter controls on the mentally ill obtaining guns....but how can that even be monitored when that information is private to begin with.

Also raising to 21 yrs. for kids having semi-automatic weapons like ar 15’s...( with exceptions).

You are not correct, my friend. Voting is the mechanism of choice in our country to protect our right that the government exists with the consent of the governed.

Raising the age to 21 for Ar-15’s and the like certainly isn’t a problem for most people as what does a student need one for? ....He doesn’t. That’s reasonable to expect .....

Trump will do whatever is politically expedient at the moment. He is not a politician nor does he have an ideology or firm beliefs. He just takes up whatever is more popular position at the moment.

Since this Florida shooting, Americans are crying for gun control now, that’s why you see Trump taking the issue up.

So, the so called constitutional ‘right to vote’, which doesn’t exist, and the expansion of that franchise over the past 100 years has done exactly what to our constitutional protections of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness (property)?

That’s right...

Two things can cause Trump to lose support.
Amnesty and gun control.

....”President trump is jeopardizing his entire presidency with this announcement”...

Well the fact you began with the above statement says you’re unwilling to hear what they want even.......Trump cannot sit back as if nothings happened, nor close his ears to those who are hurting by looking unnerved by these events happening in our country.... Saying he’s “open” is a good thing......

Further tell me why a student under 21 yrs. old needs a “fast firing” gun?

“The President needs to meet with Sessions and make an announcement that the LAW would need to be changed in order to regulate any of these devices and advise he does not support such law as it violates the second amendment.”

Reading the exact wording of the memo, I think it is set up precisely for Sessions to conclude—as he must, and as the Obama administration did—that current federal law does not authorize the executive to outlaw bump stocks. I think this is just an elaborate punt.

How can someone have 39 encounters with law enforcement and still be able to pass the background check.

The fact that he was never arrested for all the above allowed him to pass the background check.

I’m sorry but you are eating the libtard lies hook line and sinker. 18 year olds serve in the military. They are adults. The fact that you think someone doesn’t “need” a “fast firing” weapon is irrelevant. In fact, teens younger than 18 routinely hunt with semi automatic weapons.

Teens use them to target practice. They use them to learn firearms. They use them for a host of reasons.

Moreover, whether you like it or not, the Second Amendment doesn’t stop because of your judgment on what people of any age “need.”

Those primarily had to do with being called to his mothers house.... It's pretty obvious there were issues she couldn't handle or didn't know how to handle.

Generally speaking if it's not a criminal offense for teens they will always look for other options.

The problem is this guy was not skilled in how to handle social issues with the students at that school. Fitting in is difficult for most and there is always the hierarchy to contend with in every school. They arrested another 18 yr old last week who was reported for bringing a gun to school because he was so fearful of classmates. Kids have NO protection fro bullies and aggressive kids at school...none. Teachers cannot intervene so the kids are often used and abused.
