The flu vaccine is only 10 percent effective this year. Blame eggs.

The way we make vaccines isn’t a good match for the virus type circulating this year.

he first data on how well the flu vaccine is working this season in North America has just been published — and it helps explain why everyone appears to be sick right now.

The study, from the journal Eurosurveillance, found that the flu vaccine was only 10 percent effective against H3N2 (the main flu subtype going around in the US this season) among adults aged 20 to 64 years old in Canada — the age group that made up the majority of participants in the study. The protection rate rose to 17 percent when considering all age groups.

In most adults, the study suggests the shot would only prevent 10 percent of H3N2 flu cases. So if 100 in 1,000 unvaccinated people develop flu, the number would drop to 90 in 1,000 among vaccinated people — a very small difference in flu risk between vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. And more than 80 percent of confirmed US flu cases have involved H3N2.

“The evidence is mounting, from Australia and now from Canada, that the vaccine protection is low [this year],” said lead study author Danuta Skowronski, an influenza epidemiologist at the British Columbia Center for Disease Control. “Given the same H3N2 subtype [is circulating in the US], our estimate of low vaccine protection should also apply to the US.”

Be sure to get your flu shot. You won’t be able to live without your flu shot. Before flu shots mankind was on the very edge of extinction. Flu may kill you!

Sarcasm? Decide for yourself. The way things are today I don’t see how I’ve managed to survive this far let alone childhood. There is no need to be stupid about your health but one is led to believe that death is lurking around every corner and there is a medicine to just barely keep it away.

Did you know Bill Gates doesn’t allow his kids to be vaccinated for the flu?

I’ll take any edge I can get. At my age and with physical lung damage, if the shot can minimize a virus i’ll take it. I did get a respiratory virus, did not test as the flu after 2 weeks. Was a bad one, but managed to shake it after 3 weeks. If the ineffective flu shot only worked partway, that’s fine.

There’s also an influenza shot which can be taken 20 days after the common flu shot. Maybe check into it.

I’ve read recently that 80% of flu victims this season aren’t infected with a flu virus at all but a virus that causes the same symptoms. The researchers suspect there are a number of viruses causing the widespread illness that mimics the flu. Hopefully we’ll find out the truth after the flu season winds down.

“But lately, researchers have found that there are problems with the egg-based approach that specifically relate to H3N2.

“In the process of adapting virus to grow in eggs, that seems to introduce further changes to the [H3N2] virus, which may impair the effectiveness of the vaccine,” Belongia said. In other words, while growing the flu virus for vaccines, H3N2 mutates to adapt to the eggs, which seems to result in a vaccine mismatch.”

H3N2 could be a Captain Trips wannabe. Awesome!

Another circumstance where the wrong preventative measure was promoted and applied. About as much “protection”, as
stringing a barbed=wire fence along our southern border between the US and Mexico.

In some places, the “Wall” is just no more than a barbed-wire fence.

Same with this vaccine, which “protects” the recipients but does not address the real problem.

1. I don’t get flue shots. Not since being in the army late 80’s early 90’s. 2. I don’t get the flue. Ar least since the early 90’s. 3. Every year I hear a story about how the got the vaccine wrong. 4. Drug companies make billions off flue vaccine. 5. I am tired of being swindled.

My Grandmother used to tell us about the 1918 epidemic. Over 500,000 in the U.S. died.

What worse is that someone posted a study on one of threads here that stated that people who get the flu shot are emitting the flu virus from their breath. So they are infecting others.
It was something like a 360% increase in flu virus particles coming from their breath. Pretty creepy.

Never had one. Never get the flu. My wife is a nurse, she says it’s only effective against 20% of the strains at best.
