When I was a little kid, a military dependent, in Ramey AFB Puerto Rico (late 1950's to early 1960's) we were treated for hookworm, ringworm, pinworm and impetigo. We couldn't swim in untreated water because of liver flukes.

The absolutely worst affliction for a "new guy" was called the Ramey Plague. It was explosive and uncontrolled diarrhea. You could tell the new kids by when they got their first attack. They were sitting there one moment and all is well. Then suddenly...boom splat sittin' in a puddle.

The good news is you only got it once. The bad news is everyone got it.

Many years ago we were in Cancun and hubby and brother decided to go snorkeling. I had never been snorkeling and decided to give it a try. I didn’t do well, hyperventilated, so only had my face in the nice warm water a few minutes. Next day when I got up my upper lip was swollen to almost 3 times it’s size. I had a small cut on my upper lip that got bacteria in it. Looked like a humungous fever blister. I went down to the pharmacia and got some kind of black salve that the guy recommended and a few days later it was gone.

That is why there are “No Dogs” signs in parks and on beaches.
People that say well I clean up after my dog can eat what their dog is dropping.

I have known this hook worm problem for years and never go barefoot in public places.
A park with grass.NO thanks.
Beach no choice but if dogs are allowed I stay away.

This infestation only can give people the rash. Internalizes with dogs or cats. Easily treated, once identified. Usually easily identified, once thought of. Larvae can’t take much winter so northern docs may not think of it! Can be acquired in parts of southern US so docs there will be more likely to recognize it. I’ve seen vacation imports in Iowa.

Punta Cana is not that, I’ve been there a few times, and I’ve enjoyed it. The DR is my favorite place in the Caribbean.

“Their first mistake was walking barefoot on that beach.”

No. Going to the DR.

Best to just wear a pair of these when you are on the beach in a tropical paradise, just in case:

The real story is this:

Stephens said Canada’s national public health department, Health Canada, denied their request for the medication because it’s not licensed in Canada — so her mother had to drive to Detroit, Michigan, to get the medicine.

Just think what things would be like here if 0-care really got going.

Most likely they are “Sand” worms. They enter through cuts in the feet and tunnel throughout the sole of the foot. Only way to get rid of them is by freezing them. Blistering and calluses are a result of the freezing. I contracted them at about age 12. Doctors stated my case was the worst they had ever seen. They took pictures for inclusion in some medical publication.

I treated lots of hookworm infections when I was a medical officer in the US Army during Viet Nam.

The worms do get to the gut, where the adults attach to the small intestine and become parasites sucking the blood of the host. They can cause a severe anemia.

Not enough information in this article to say it was definitely hookworm. The diagnosis is usually made from eggs in the stool, but that comes later in the course of the infestation.

I always wear water sandals when going into rocky water.

Now I will be wearing them at sandy beaches:

Cutaneous larval migrans. Dog owners that don't routinely deworm their dogs have their dogs develop this often. This can also happen in yards where the dog feces is not policed and disposed or compounded. These days because of the heartworm prevention veterinarians don't see it as often as we did forty years ago but it is still seen. Younger veterinarians often miss this diagnosis because it is now pretty rare.
