FULL TITLE: Elderly couple stopped last month with 60 pounds of pot arrested again on suspicion of possessing drug money

A California couple arrested last month with 60 pounds of marijuana that they described as Christmas gifts were arrested again Tuesday on suspicion of possessing drug money.

Patrick and Barbara Jiron of Clearlake Oaks, California, were arrested on Interstate 80 in western Lancaster County. Sheriff’s deputies stopped the couple’s westbound pickup truck, saying it was following another vehicle too closely, Sgt. Jason Mayo said.

“A deputy made the stop, and their daughter was driving,” Mayo said. “A K-9 (service dog) was deployed and alerted to the presence of drugs.”

A search of the couple’s 2016 Toyota Tacoma turned up a little more than $18,000 in cash that “tested positive for a strong odor of marijuana,” Mayo said. The couple signed what’s known as an abandonment form stating that they do not claim the money as their own, he said.

Patrick Jiron, 80, and Barbara Jiron, 70, were booked into the Lancaster County Jail. Each paid 10 percent of $2,500 bail and was released. Their daughter, a Vermont resident, was not arrested.

The Jirons are scheduled to appear in Lancaster County Court Wednesday, Mayo said. A hearing for Barbara Jiron in York County was postponed until Jan. 17, when her husband also is scheduled to appear.

Last month, the two were stopped on I-80 near the Bradshaw exit after York County sheriff’s deputies saw the couple’s eastbound 2016 pickup drift across lane lines.

During that stop Dec. 19, deputies said they smelled marijuana. During a search of the pickup, deputies found 60 pounds of marijuana valued at $336,000 in the pickup truck’s topper. The York County Sheriff’s Office said the estimated value of the marijuana was $336,000.

Multiple containers of concentrated THC also were found, officials said. The couple told York County sheriff’s officials that they planned to make stops in Boston and Vermont to distribute the marijuana to family and friends as Christmas gifts.

They were charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and having no drug tax stamp. Patrick Jiron posted bail in York County, according to court records. His wife was released due to a medical condition.

Yeah, I’ve thought about flying out to CO or OR or CA and loading up a car full. You could get rich quick! Then I lay down until the feeling goes away.

This sounds like one of the parallel investigation type deals.

As in...They(feds) illegally wiretap this couple and when they know they are in possession of something illegal or money, they contact the local PD who then makes up an excuse(following too closely) to pull them over. Once the dogs alert, the game is up.

No. Pot’s only for glaucoma. Cataracts you got to remove by surgery. Although if they smoke enough of it and its some heavy shit, they may try to do the surgeries themselves and save a few bucks that they could invest in more weed.

Note to self: check car later to see if there is any money that doesn't belong to me.

Exactly.

This was no accident, no coincidence this couple was pulled over for some bogus charge of following too closely.

“Hey, there goes the Jirons again. Lets pull them over and see what they got this time!”
