THE WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD DEC. 29, 2017

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Greetings from Missouri. It's been a cold, cloudy, gloomy day. I have a really bad cold - first bad one in about 8 years. Drinking lots of hot liquids.

I wanted to get the thread posted, but I'm going to go back to bed, and I'll catch up later. Have a great weekend. God Bless.

Making a double batch of lemon marmalade, some calamondin/caracara navel orange marmalade (w a scorpion pepper for added zing!) this weekend.

Cooking up the last of my pumpkins to freeze.

Making space on my countertop to start umpteen citrus cuttings and starts for early spring garden.

And freezing my tuchus off.

Beautiful weather here in the heart of the Redwoods and the garden is on auto pilot. We have 2 buckets of Naked Lady bulbs that need to get planted as they are leafing out but no ambition to do it and rain returns late next week. Big dinner planned for New Years day for about 12 family members.

A HAPPY & HEALTHY NEW YEAR TO Y’ALL...

My compost barrel sat for a few years full of dried up grass clippings and coffee grounds. So I’ve decided to try to make it work. I’ve moved it out of the wind and closer to a water hose. I’ve been adding organic material instead of throwing it out. It’s starting to look and smell like it might be working. We’ll see. The garden could use some compost!

Heading over to the town where our RV is located. I am buying a used x-y table for my drill press off of Craig’s List and it is located there, so I may swing by and hike in to see how our trailer and neighbors’ trailer is.

We are still in the deep freeze. Minus one this morning.

Somewhere under about a half foot of snow, my garlic is doing it’s thing.

Ditto for the sweet williams up front.

I’m amazed how cold kills some things completely and others are like meh.

Proably the last of the garden seed catalogs are in a stack, waiting our attention and choosing.
Doggon cold. Plenty of firewood.

Making tire patches for breakfast.

It was -3 here this morning. Mr. T is out putting salt on the driveway so that the oil truck can deliver. Thoughts of summer seem far away.

Hope you’re feeling better soon, greeneyes.

Mass. is my home State. South Shore. I survived the blizzard of 78.

Now they’re talking two nights in a row of -5.

Even in the Spring, I won’t be doing much gardening. Need to concentrate on making money this year.

One thing I will be doing is putting up a high tunnel, making soil for it and getting it weed free.(with the help of my two kids) A neighbor was trashing an arched top hay shed so I got the old arched pipe. It’s the same size as the heaviest high tunnel pipe. I’ll be growing things almost year round at some point.

I got a lovely little compost tumbler for Christmas: tumbler at the top, compost tea at the bottom. With a big huge warning on the instructions that says “COMPOST TEA IS NOT INTENDED FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION. DO NOT DRINK COMPOST TEA.”

That’s a great idea-especially with the help of the pipe.

I hear they’re a lot of work and you have to be diligent to make them produce but IF you can do it, it’s a heckuva bounty. The covering is less than $200 so I’m going to give it a shot. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll park vehicles under it or something. LOL You see a lot of empty ones around that people have given up on.
