White privilege bolstered by teaching math, university professor says

A math education professor at the University of Illinois says the ability to solve geometry and algebra problems and teaching such subjects perpetuates so-called white privilege.

Rochelle Gutierrez laid out her views on the subject in an article for a newly published anthology for math educators titled, “Building Support for Scholarly Practices in Mathematics Methods.”

“School mathematics curricula emphasizing terms like Pythagorean Theorem and pi perpetuate a perception that mathematics was largely developed by Greeks and other Europeans," she says, according to Campus Reform.

She also says that addressing equity in mathematics education will come when teachers can understand and negotiate the politics outside the classroom.

“On many levels, mathematics itself operates as whiteness. Who gets credit for doing and developing mathematics, who is capable in mathematics, and who is seen as part of the mathematical community is generally viewed as white,” she writes.

My youngest brother (a lib lawyer) almost certainly never had trig or geometry. He used to brag about how little math he took on his way to getting a law degree.

Math phobia is not just for ghettos and barrios.

Bingo. Math education is to math as astrology is to astronomy. I'll eat my hat if this particular professor can describe a quadratic equation, much less solve one. Too hard? Call it "racist" and you don't have to learn it. Or teach it.

You are spot on with your observations.

Mercator chart projections have been called racist as well
because of the distortion that result when going from 3-D to 2-D. However, the mercator navigation charts are drawn so that on the vertical lines, one inch is the same distance on the entire chart. If not navigation is much more difficult.

“Colored Privilege” == the right to say the most idiotic, racist things against whites, and be taken seriously.

It is obvious, there were great mathematicians in sub-Saharan Africa and they achieved great knowledge but those evil whites (not their fellow melanin-rich neighbors or those fine upstanding Muslim believers) hunted them down, destroying their works and enslaving them to other places. /s

Yes, there were excellent mathematicians in Islam (al jabr) as there were in India and China BUT my dear Ms Gutierrez, the singular line of development in this field goes from the ancient Middle East, Greece, Rome, the Islamic Caliphates and then to Europe from the post Crusade periods. The half millennium plus from 1400 to 2000 was almost entirely white European in mathematical progress.

Neither all of your tears or ravings can wipe that fact off of the history books. All of those names, too many to mention, come from or have ancestry derived from there. All this being said, I want to know who your students are so I can AVOID any structures who critical values were computed by the math you teach!

Illinois has a very good math department. I think some guys from that department solved the Four Color Map problem.

Wouldn't it be fun to see the faculty of the math department go over and picket the math ed department!

To just dismiss these hate driven quacks as being nuts, misses the essential point. The only thing which makes these bizrre opinions even remotely indicative of any thinking process, is a deep seated hatred for America, her founders & their descendants (the posterity discussed in the Preamble, which states the clear purpose of the Constitutional Federation).

Would anyone who respects that Constitution--or the heritage that it represents--have any reason whatsoever, to denounce "whiteness,' whatever that is intended to mean to the hate driven loon?

There may be all sorts of differences of opinion, which may be endlessly debated. But an opinion that denies--and seeks to remove--the very heritage that our founding was intended to protect, clearly, has no place among those pretending to any meaningful citizenship.
