(CNN)Parents like to see themselves as purveyors of possibility. We want our children to inhabit a world in which identities are both mutable and equal, and imagination and empathy reign supreme!
But young children, as dictated by their tastes in popular culture, have something else in mind. They're drawn to worlds in which identities are fixed, order trumps imagination and transgressions are met with routine punishment.
This clash between what parents desire for their children and what children desire for themselves is most easily observable in cartoon preferences. So often, the more parents dislike a show, the more their children love it.
Two of the most divisive shows are "Thomas the Tank Engine" and "Paw Patrol," both of which have been eviscerated by grown-ups on discussion boards, in social media and in widely shared essays in prestigious publications.

LOL CNN has too much time on their hands..my 2 1/2 yr old nephew LOVES Thomas(And Mickey Mouse) watches it all the time on his iPad
Are they as fascist as Elf on a Shelf? The Christmas “tradition” created by George Orwell.
"I watched 'Paw Patrol' once with my daughter, and on that episode, Skye volunteered for a mission, but then Ryder picked two male pups," said Rebekah Pajak, a mother of a 2-year-old and a 1-year-old in Chicago. Skye is the only female in the core team of six rescue pups on the show. "I remember thinking, 'There's a glass ceiling in this cartoon!' "
It’s obvious they’re (Liberals) torqued off that a white male is at the top.
Me too! (except I watch on my big screen TV)
The Left has gone around the bend..
"On the other hand, children take comfort in the idea that someone is in charge. To them, Ryder isn't a megalomaniac, and Sir Topham Hatt of "Thomas" isn't a neocolonial autocrat. They're just the guys delegating responsibilities to their eager inferiors. And the fact that these leaders, both white males, look like most figures in position of authority in the real world is not lost on children."
“Thomas,” the long-running television franchise about a group of working trains chugging away on the Island of Sodor, has been called a “premodern corporate-totalitarian dystopia” in the New Yorker, imperialist and sinister in Slate, and classist, sexist and anti-environmentalist in the Guardian. And yet people — presumably parents — spend $1 billion on “Thomas” merchandise every year.”
So because some Nitwit liberal writers as so whackadoo that an ordered, consistent and reliable world in a show is enjoyed by children to them is some sort of problem... shows me just how little they grasp about humanity and truly suffer from a mental disorder.
Human beings who are not mentally abused do not seek out chaos and disorder, in fact human beings go out of their way to find routine and “normalcy” even among the most intense disorder when they must exist in that state.
These “critics” are simply abject morons, period.
So order and civility are “fascist”?
Read the article...all the bitching is coming from parents being represented by organizations such as Buzzfeed, The Guardian, and multiple other left wing Bozos who can find political oppression in whether the toilet paper comes over the top, or from underneath.
that is why I say liberals have NO life look at the nonsense they are worried about..what next..Spongebob Squarepants
Thomas the Train was written by an Anglican priest for his family and the stories are wonderful!
Sir Topham Hatt is the Controller, though.....
Anybody who hangs the roll draping down the back has GOT to be a communist
They are when they hinder progress!
(See Youre greedy if you dont give me your stuff.)
/eyeroll.
Thomas? Really?
I grew up with Bugs and Yosemite Sam. I can state without fear of contradiction that I have yet to shoot anybody in the face with a muzzle loading 32 lb. cannon. :-)
One thing I used to love about Rocky & Bullwinkle was that adults and children laughed at it but at different times. These would be the folks who didn’t laugh at it at all. Too bad for them.
Of course not! Spongebob is OBVIOUSLY an intersectional, androgynous, osseous-challenged, protagonist employed in the fast food industry (where all the great thinkers come from!).
However, this kind of missive is just another example of how the left spends every waking moment of their existence trying to find ever more abstruse, unfalsifiable, justifications for acting like dicks.
