President Franklin Roosevelt called December 7, 1941, a date which will live in infamy. On that day, Japanese planes attacked the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor. The bombing killed more than 2,400 Americans. It completely destroyed the American battleship U.S.S. Arizona and capsized the U.S.S. Oklahoma. The attack brought the United States into World War II.
The attack sank or beached a total of twelve ships and damaged nine others. 160 aircraft were destroyed and 150 others damaged. The attack took the country by surprise, especially the ill-prepared Pearl Harbor base. December 7, 2017 marks the 76th anniversary of the attack.

The Japs were also assuming that Hitler would take care of Russia, and thus the Japanese didn’t need to worry about committing troops against the Soviet Union.

“...We had a chance to avoid the whole thing but Hull killed the deal.”
Many American citizens think their country is too good to involve itself in the affairs of the world: the “shining city on a hill,” and all that. To the extent that the nation produces individuals that out of touch, the nation deserves to be embarrassed, and will only suffer more attacks in the future.
Many Americans are misinformed: the United States came into existence as a trading nation and thus by definition cannot stand aloof.
In 1914-1917, many believed the nonsense peddled by the isolationists. They were surpassed in arrogance, dimwittedness, and self-righteousness only by those who in 1931-1941 believed the nonsense peddled by the isolationists.
