Precisely on the grounds that the county handed them; it might be rabid.

Okay. Now, taxpayers, some have said that such samples (potentially rabid dog’s heads) should only be taken by public offices instead of private veterinarians. This is fun. ;-)

I used to be a butcher. Maybe I can start a new business to take care of the shortage of economical head-chopping professionals for rabies testing:

Yeah, the more I think about it, this was a job for animal control and nobody else. If the town didn’t have an animal control officer, at least on call, then they’re backwards and not up to normal standards.

deputies told him he needed to decapitate his dead pit bull or go to jail.
Show me that statute that says I have to cut my own dogs head off or go to jail.

Anyone who thinks a pitbull, let alone a rabid one, is a harmless, loveable creature, is mentally unbalanced.

“Cutting up a potentially rabid dog. Sounds like a job for the public health sector”
An astute observation. You won the case IMO.

A veterinarian or a public health professional that has been vaccinated against rabies should remove the dead dog's head. The head is NOT to be frozen but refrigerated until it is shipped to a lab that will do the Negri Body Testing for rabies. The Public Health department has funds to employ a rabies vaccinated veterinarian for the removal of the animal's head. It is the job of the Health Department to see to the safety of the person bitten and that the person bitten was not exposed to the fatal disease of rabies.
To: Lurker
No you would end up paying the vet to do it.
To: Lurker
they gave him the option of taking it to a vet. If my kid had been bit and the dog was killed, I would like to know if my kid needs rabbi shots.

There are laws on the books in most municipalities that state that if a dog bites a person then that dog is to be quarantined for a period of two weeks. If the dog is dead and cannot be quarantined then the head has to be removed and sent to a lab refrigerated for a Negri body examination. The health department is the governing body and law. The reason for this is because rabies is a fatal disease and knowing the status of the biting animal is important whether to begin the rabies vaccine regimen or treat the wound as just as a routine potential infectious bite. The rabies vaccination has the potential to have side effects so its important to perform as many tests as necessary to keep the person bitten from undergoing unnecessary expensive and potential harmful treatments.

Checking the brain for rabies. What is the problem?
If the dog had rabies vaccine, it would not be needed.

I want to see the statute that says the owner of the animal has to do it or face arrest and jail.
