Two Fort Hood soldiers who went for a hike Monday evening at Chalk Ridge Falls Park ended up staying the night after getting lost, according to the Bell County Sheriffs Department.
The two soldiers, both women, were hiking at the park along Stillhouse Hollow Lake when it began to get dark and they lost their way, said Bell County Sheriffs Department spokesman T.J. Cruz.
They called 911 when they got lost.
Deputies searched with dogs for the soldiers.
They were hiking along the fence line when they took a left instead of a right, Cruz said. They were never in distress at any point.
The soldiers regained cellphone service Tuesday morning, called their friends and were able to get a ride home.
They found their way out of the hiking trail between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., and contacted the sheriffs department.
Deputies then met up with the duo to make sure they were all right, Cruz said.
Chalk Ridge Falls Park features a 3.1-mile hiking trail. It is by Stillhouse Hollow Lake.

What puzzled the Sheriff who retrieved them
was how two women could spend the night in
a forested region and yet smell like fish.

Probably more like they lost track of time. How can you get lost in an area of half a mile square with paths and bordered by a lake?

This is really pitiful, SOLDIERS?? There are roads in every direction within 1-2 miles there. It is not remote wilderness by any stretch of the imagination. I guess as soon as it got dark they just decided to hang out for the night.

Soldiers do not get lost. They get “terrain bedazzled”.

Yeah, did a Google map of the area and you would have to try to get lost there. Roads, houses, lake, even a BSA camp.
Bet the scouts don't get lost overnight.

There isn’t a place inside the United States that I cannot run out of to find civilization with a canteen of water.
Me, if lost, (not going to happen LoL) find a place to sleep and get your bearings later. Look at the stars before you go to sleep to situate yourself. ;-)

My neighbor, who passed away recently, was an infantry grunt kid in WWII European Theater.
One of the many heartbreaking stories he told was of a couple brand new LTs who showed up to his unit fresh out of West Point/OCS and were to lead an evening patrol. When queried about the area terrain and directions they couldn't even point out which way was north. When my neighbor politely suggested they let one of the experienced men navigate for the patrol while they observed, they arrogantly refused.
They led the patrol, got lost and led the company into a german stronghold. They and over 100 of their men perished that night. It still greatly disturbed my neighbor, 70+ years later.
(I'm not much into military history, but if any Freepers have ever heard of such an instance, I'd love to hear the details. My neighbor wouldn't speak much about the details and I didn't press too hard.)
