No. Never call the police for anything.

We have an obnoxious woman that lives next door who has a Great Pyrenees that barks all night sometimes. That low pitched bark really carries. I’ve had a few words with her about it with no effect, so I’m taking a different tact.

My son — who is an actual rocket scientist — is building me an ultrasonic sound cannon that will send a 200W 24K-30K Hz tone toward the offending dog’s direction. We haven’t tested it yet, but I’m hoping it works.

The alternative is a stray gunshot or dognapping...

Exactly stated. There are lots of things we have to deal with. A crying infant next door is just one of them.

Maybe try some foam earplugs.

I’m the typo who will go to certain (sober) neighbors and complain if their music is too loud, but I don’t know about this one. I can usually tell if it’s a very young infant crying, as opposed to a nursery school child just mad that the candy ran out. Many kids quickly learn about ‘fake crying’, that gets louder the more the parent pays attention to the noise.

My guess is the parents of a screaming baby don’t want the noise either, and would immediately take out their frustrations on me. I try to deal with it. I often wonder how the parents can stand it, so close to the noisemaker.
Sometimes, I hear a neighbor child crying and conclude that this child is mentally disabled, and tends to fly into hysteria over level of frustration.

Safer to say nothing, unless you know there is abuse going on.

I know right? You can tell somebody to turn the music down. You can tell adults to stop shouting at each other. But you can’t turn a baby off or make it stop crying if it doesn’t want to. What are they supposed to do, leave?

Only in a country where bar-be-que smoke can be considered a nuisance would this be anything but risible.

either do your best to ignore the infant’s unending crying fit, or file a noise complaint and let the police handle the problem.

Yeah, call the police. That'll help things.

Some of young mothers may be confused and a little frightened by that ‘echoing cries of the baby’ example.
There is something detached and ‘Steven-Kingesque’ about it.

If you’re around it regularly you do become somewhat desensitized to the wailing. It doesn’t produce the same gut wrenching feelz that it does when you haven’t been around it much or in a long time.

The only sure fix is cutting the auditory nerve, but try the ear plugs first.

We had twins.
One of them was always awake. They seemed to take shifts sleeping.
The first year of their lives was an unholy terror that seemed to last five years. It wore us to a frazzle.

My folks would come visit and keep the boys for a weekend every two months.
They would stay at our place with the boys and we would get a motel room and sleep the entire weekend.
That is the only way we all made it through their first year.

Thankfully our downstairs neighbor was a widower, retired army non com who didn’t let anything faze him. A really good guy.

Buy a fan/white noise machine. Easy.

I had a neighbor downstairs who was in her 70’s. Her ex-con, druggie son would come pounding at her door to beg for money. Her mistake was letting him in her apartment every time he showed up. Everyone in the apartment building heard it, but nobody complained to the landlord, or called the cops. I don’t know how everyone else adjusted to it, but because I worked various shifts, and needed to be able to sleep, I started running a fan on high in my bedroom...never heard a thing after that. The neighbor eventually died, so her son stopped coming around. That was back in the early 2000’s. And although I retired in 2003, I’ve continued to run that same fan every night since. I don’t hear a thing when it’s running, which is fine with me.

“... how the parents stand it...”

Our second child had colic. From what the pediatrician said, it was classified as a severe type since she screamed all the time. Some colic babies only scream in the morning and others in the evening. Four months, ten days and six hours of it.... it was very, VERY difficult for me (I also had a four year old at the time). What got us through was we were told it wouldn’t last forever and a baby doesn’t die from crying. We were told it doesn’t affect their future personality either (I was concerned that she was going through such torment and pain). That being said, I was beyond exhausted. Ever been so tired that you cried? If this infant has colic... it’s no fun for the parents either. :)

I was trying not to be racist and purchased the black noise machine instead. MAN WAS THAT A MISTAKE!

Random gun fire, tires screeching, police sirens half the night. I got up twice to check the door because I heard some one knocking....you guessed it, some dope dealer on the black noise machine going door to door selling dope!

Believe me you want the white noise machine.
