Two women went on a search for their beloved cat after the devastating wildfires that swept across Northern California. During the search, they came across two cats that had survived the unthinkable.

They knew they had to save them!

After Brandi Ann's home was completely destroyed by the raging fires, she and her girlfriend Steph Gediman were determined to find her cat, Apu, who had gone missing.

"We were back in the neighborhood the morning after the fires took place looking for her cat. We got out of the car and I stood there blank in the face just trying to concept all the destruction," Steph told Love Meow.

Gee, I know the education system in CA has suffered since I was a kid (growing up in the area now devastated by the fires), but this is ridiculous.

Trying to "conceptualize" all of the destruction?

Trying to "conceive" of all the destruction?

I suspect that the reporter is to blame.

I know. Truly pathetic. I wonder where these gals work. But good on them for saving the kitties.

You are correct. It could be that the woman spoke correctly, and the reporter failed with English grammar.

What is needed to fireproof a home in California has been known for decades.

Metal roof, Concrete or adobe construction, preferably earth sheltered, no trees or shrubs close to house.

Simple, easy.

And adobe is such a beautiful type of material and fits in perfectly with CA architecture and history.

In such cases, a reporter can also legitimately be expected to "clean up" the syntax and grammar of the interviewee, at least a little.

Perhaps. I think that a direct quote requires almost word-for-word repetition, while a paraphrase can be cleaned up. In this case, the reporter should have inserted "[sic]" if that was the wording the woman used.

Of course, the grammar discussion is a distraction from the thread's topic, that of finding badly burned kitties after the fires.

***What is needed to fireproof a home in California has been known for decades.***

Years ago I came upon a quote from Ben Franklin, in which he wondered about people who would “build their homes of the same fuel that they cook their food and warm their homes with”.

That helps with preventing stray burning embers from igniting a house, but once a fire builds to the magnitude of these fires thru the burning of the surrounding foliage, you’re dealing with a fire so hot the air itself becomes superheated. A flashover.

The writer Jack London made his home in the Sonoma Valley. In the early 1900s, he had a home built--it was to be his dream home, and it was designed with all of the latest fire-proofing technology available at the time. A month before he was to move in, the house burned, leaving nothing but the stone walls. Jack London intended to rebuild, but died before he could get that project going. You can visit the ruins of that house, the Wolf House, at the Jack London State Park near Sonoma, CA. That has always been one of my favorite parks to visit.

---------------------------------------------------------- It takes a lot of fuel to reach those temperatures.

There is a lot of thermal mass to overcome in a house, especially one designed to withstand fires.

If you have your house located on top of a ridge with lots of trees below you, yes.

It happens in very fuel rich environments.

Here is a pic from the cat article. Funny how the house is burned to a crisp, but surrounding trees are not...

Arson was suspected. Hard to design a house against arson.

Even so, the stone walls did not burn, and remain standing.
