DeAndre Hopkins leaves Texans facility, other players upset over Bob McNair's comments

Houston Texans owner Bob McNair apologized, but his regrettable comments won’t be forgotten by his players that easily.

McNair reportedly said, “We can’t have the inmates running the prison” during last week’s meetings between players and owners over the national anthem issue. McNair said he was using a figure of speech, but anyone should be able to understand why players wouldn’t be so quick to forgive.

The Texans considered a walkout Friday, according to Sarah Barshop of ESPN, and star receiver DeAndre Hopkins did leave. Texans coach Bill O’Brien said Hopkins took a “personal day” after he wasn’t seen at practice. Yahoo Sports’ Shalise Manza Young reports that Hopkins left the building due to McNair’s comments, according to a source. According to Manza Young, O’Brien and general manager Rick Smith met with the players over McNair’s comments.

Barshop also reported the Texans are planning something before Sunday’s game at Seattle but are unsure what that will be. Manza Young reported one possibility is some Texans could take the logo off their helmets.

Texans offensive tackle Duane Brown said he thought McNair’s comments were disrespectful and it “sickened” him, according to ESPN and Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

“This is bigger than just the protests,” Brown said about McNair’s comments, according to Barshop. “This is the view of player-owner relationship. This is how you view us. You’re an inmate, we can’t let you guys out of line. We can’t let you speak for yourself. We can’t let you have your own beliefs. That’s what it feels like. It’s a bad situation.”

This is not a story that will go away simply because McNair put out a public apology. Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green said on Instagram he thought McNair’s comments were “Donald Sterling-esque,” referring to the disgraced former Los Angeles Clippers owner. McNair’s comments drew an immediate and intense reaction, adding another layer to an already uncomfortable divide between players and owners.

Now McNair has angered at least a good number of his players, and they reportedly had to be convinced to not walk off the job Friday. His star receiver and one of the Texans’ most recognizable players did leave without practicing.

His apology was a step, but far from the final one if he wants to resolve a suddenly divisive situation.

I think the Texans were perceived (wrongly) as being above all the national anthem BS. I’m kinda glad to see this development. Yet another NFL domino falls.

To be clear. A “convict” has been caught and convicted. “Thug” might have been more appropriate, as in “The Thugs are running the neighborhood”.

God help him had he told the players to mind their cotton pickin’ business.

That might be what makes it hard to get past unfortunately. Of he’s going to hide behind, “it’s a figure of speech”, it might’ve been nice to have gotten it right! But he didn’t and the difference is a lot more of a racial tripwire. At least he didn’t say, “we can’t have the slaves running the plantation!”

Complete insanity. You have a league whose players routinely call each other either the N-word or MFer, and more often than not, both, but take umbrage first, that the President besmirched their mothers (the old 7th grade tactic used on playgrounds to shame the unsuspecting) by saying, “Fire the SOBs,” and now take umbrage at the mangling of a saying that’s been around for almost 100 years (though they’d object just as much to the non-mangled saying) because they find their honor besmirched. This on top of objecting to being called a big boy or a gorilla which equally applies to the likes of JJ Watt and Vince Wilfork because they are massive human beings (6’5”/290 and 6’2”/325, respectively) and zip to do with skin color, but that didn’t prevent those terms from becoming verboten as now inmates has become.

I think what he meant to say was the “inmates running the asylum”, as in the ‘foxes running the hen house”.

McNair really botched his metaphores, and landed himself in heap big trouble.

At least Houstonians still have the Astros to root for.

Too bad McNair had to ruin it by apologizing.

What McNair needs to do is just forfeit the rest of his games and then his players can sit it out and no salary.

Let’s see what happens when the season is over and it’s time to pay for 2018 season tickets. 2017 ticket money is in the bank. Next spring the owners will be forced to end this or take a financial bath.

Despite my liking the Texas teams, I hope it does happen to put an end to the NFL as it currently is. A couple of forfeits coupled with the end of Thursday night football mid season would pretty much dumpster the season as a whole.

Is it really? The left got what they wanted. They destroy yet another of society’s institutions - one that didn’t benefit them.

Inmates/asylum is the figure of speech. I have never heard anyone use inmates/prison.

Leave. Go. Get to steppin' We're tired of grievance-mongers, race-mongers and downright dumb people being paid millions to bellyache. Go. Plenty more players itching for your spot.

The social engineering was by the left. They took an institution that wasn’t in their favor and turned the nonleft against. Most Freepers don’t even see how thoroughly Alinky’ed they are.

I’m fortunately trying to sell my PSL’s to the Texans. I’ve been able to sell the tickets themselves this year, and didn’t even lose any money on the deal. I made a small amount, less than 100 bucks total, so consider it a wash.
