WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD OCTOBER 14, 2017
freerepublic | October 14, 2017 | greeneyes

Posted on 10/14/2017 9:56:51 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Greetings from Mo. We have had several days of internet service outage. Just now restored. My garlic came in this week, and I hope to get it planted next week sometime.

I am working on taxes this weekend. Hubby is laying tile in the bathroom, and hoping to have the toilet reinstalled tomorrow. He has nearly finished taking out the concrete patio where he needs to put the footing for the green house.

Hope everyone is doing well. Have a great weekend. Prayers up for all. God Bless.

Been reading up on saving my geraniums through the winter for next year, by hanging them bare root in paper bags. Looks like tomorrow will include a trip to Trader Joe's, where I can get said paper bags, unlike most grocery stores.

Also making sure to keep stupid squirrels from digging up tender plants, as they are in an absolute frenzy this year to bury all their stupid acorns in my garden. We were just remarking today how this year, there seem to be twice as many squirrels as we've ever seen before. I actually staked a wire basket over 3 new baby hostas I got to keep the squirrels from digging them up. These are bold squirrels, which don't even move when you shoo them away, and will scamper within a couple feet of you, ignoring any verbal threats.

Got my garlic planted, mulched and covered with remay to keep the critters from digging it up. 36 feet of German Red and 36 feet of Chinese Early Red that matures a month earlier...

I have been sick for two weeks and when combined with the rainy season that means I have weeds everywhere.

The grass is literally knee high. I have to find a way to mow this week.

We have bananas ripening. The endless watermelons along with Papayas.

Everything else was either ruined by the rain or eaten by the snails.

Do any potted palms do well inside a Care Facilty Home with indirect sunlight? The palm at my work area has fronds about five feet long. The plant has been withering. I’ve suggested to my boss the tree (actually a cluster of many plants jammed inside a big plastic pot) would be better off outside in the direct sun.

She thinks the direct sun would kill it. Really?
She has been told by the nurseryman that this palm tree
‘likes to be touched’. Okay, right. Sounds like Hippy-Talk to me, but maybe there is something to it.

I got kind of sick the last couple years so I lost my tiny little bit of gardening mojo.

All I have to do is look at at a plant and I kill it. I swear I can’t grow anything from seed anymore!

I gave up in spring, hubs bought starts and took over but neither one of us has ever been good at this.

So I’m going to throw everything at the wall and see if anything will stick.

The hugelkultur bed only has one spot to fill in. I about did myself in last Friday trying to get it done. I still need to put manure and mulch down but am waiting for the smoke to die down.

I started a bunch of winter type stuff strictly to see if I could even start anything anymore. I either water too much or too little so my seedlings either rot or shrivel up. Now that I’m feeling better maybe I’ll be able to keep up with things better. (Got thyroid meds dialed in, lost 25 lbs, did physical therapy and got a lot more active)

I started a bunch of seeds in paper towels and sandwich bags. Most of them are trying but I think I waited a tadbit too long to try and do something with them. I have my doubts-the tutorials look much more promising than IRL.

I have several self watering setups-a cup within a cup and water bottle-both with wicks and the egg carton in a tray set up. If anything lives I’m going to try and find out which method is best. I don’t want to waste a ton of money if I still can’t grow anything.

I read about Guam. Pretty place but lots of bugs and stuff.

All that and snails too?

I hate those things they eat everything!

We never get rid of them here they’re just awful.

“All that and snails too?”

I have a Chinese friend that eats the snails so I don’t kill them. I just collect them in a bucket and give them to her. She feeds them stale bread for a week or so and then cooks them.

Never been an escargot fan but I am glad to help with her grocery bill.

Do you have the giant snails I’ve read about or just the ordinary native ones?

If I saw one of those giant African snails in my yard I would probably run like heck.

We have snails that can grow to about 2 1/2 inches long. They are pretty big but not giants.

My PROUDEST gardening accomplishment to date! Been trying for YEARS to grow decent melons - it took me FIVE MONTHS to do it, but I finally got TWO really nice Honeydew Melons to maturity up here on The Frozen Tundra! First FREEZE is scheduled for tonight! It has finally stopped raining, so we are heading down to the lower garden to see if buttternut squash can be picked and to dig up Sweet Potatoes to see if we got anything this first try, too. Fingers Crossed! I'll report back later in the day.

If she can eat them more power to her.

Definitely a win win situation.

The mockingbirds got more of my tomatoes this year than I’d like. Now, thanks to a sudden burst of warm weather, I have twenty-five-and-counting volunteer tomato seedlings in the front yard. Part of me is tempted to dig ‘em up and overwinter them indoors. The rest is more sensibly hoping for a few more volunteers at the RIGHT time of year.

A long time ago, I planted some Sweet 100 cherry tomatoes from seed before I lost my mojo.

We still get volunteers every year.

Hello Everyone. I’m “sprouting” some passion flower stems. I’ve read it takes 3 months for roots to begin. I’m looking for seeds, they take a year to germinate. If anyone knows more about these flowers, please advise. I’m going to cover a couple of flowers with netting to capture the seeds. Is this a good thing to do? Any and all help is appreciated.

That kind of behavior in squirrels might indicate a harsh winter heading your way.
