A man caught on camera shooting a young buck with a bow and arrow in Monrovia has sparked outrage among residents.
A video taken Thursday afternoon shows Mike Rodriguez taking aim at a young buck. The deer runs down the street, leaving a trail of blood. Moments later, the animal died.
I couldnt believe it. Im like, Youve got to be kidding me. Somebody took a shot at a deer right in front of our house in a residential neighborhood? neighbor Chuck Tapert said.
Rodriguez came forward to identify himself as the man in the video. He defends his actions, saying the video lacks context.
Rodriguez said he shot the deer earlier that day in deer hunting Zone D-11 above Monrovia but failed to kill the animal.
I didnt want it to suffer any more than it had to because of my bad shot, he said. It moved at the exact time I fired my arrow so I didnt hit in the kill zone. I hit it high in the back of the spine area.
Rodriguez said the wounded deer ran off and he was able to track it to the neighborhood in Monrovia Hills.
I wasnt up there to shoot an animal in a residential area, Rodriguez insisted. I was following up a wounded animal and trying to take him out so he wasnt suffering any more.
Some residents arent believing it.
I think hes got a little fib going here covering his tracks, resident Robyn Tapert said. So dont come back and do that in our neighborhood because we actually care for the wildlife up here.
California Department of Fish and Wildlife officials are investigating the incident and are still trying to determine if they will seek charges against Rodriguez.
I’d like to buy that guy a beer. Deer are just rats with hooves.
One less deer to cause $2K damage to someones car.
And if he hit a child, no big deal, because children never make sudden moves in a residential area.
If he hit a child, I’d buy him a round of hemlock instead. But then again, children don’t typically eat up people’s gardens or jump off the side of the road through people’s windshields.
Now, if he tackled it and killed it with his bare hands.
So true!
My wife threatens to impale one of the herd our state Fish and Game folks dumped on us. In the city, can’t grow a garden because the protected deer multiply like rabbits and eat everything in sight.
Typical gun-free zone.
Bumping off Bambi bothers people, but they will eat Elsie. So it goes.
Rather have rats, personally. Last time I hit one of those brown speed bumps it did $8000 damage to my SUV. Wasn’t the first, and in Central PA will certainly not be the last.
The vic..
I don’t think killing the dear is the issue. I think firing a weapon in a residential neighborhood is the issue.
Oh sure. No doubt CBS would be covering this story if someone just shot an arrow in a neighborhood. Somewhere Darwin is laughing.
He used a bow and arrow.
A few years ago a hunting buddy of mine was living out on the edge of town, near town, but not in town. In a covenant controlled community, a homeowners association. A bear was coming around getting in trash and stuff. My hunting buddy and others had young children and was doing everything they could to discourage this bear, which was getting more and more “friendly.”
One early morning, my hunting buddy had enough, and BAM, shot the bear. It turns out, one of the liberal neighbors had been feeding the bear which was making it more and more “friendly” and making it come around more and more. The liberal neighbor was also sitting out in the mornings watching the bear while feeding. The liberal neighbor was very surprised that morning while drinking her coffee and watching the bear, when, BAM, she saw it get shot by my hunting buddy. The liberal neighbor charged my hunting buddy for mental anguish - she lost.
This is still very funny to me.
Ought to be jailed for several years, minimum, o and community service, don't forget the community service.

That neighbor had mental anguish long before the bear got shot.
What these residential idiots don’t know is when there are too many deer in a residential area due to these idiots feeding them, the city management will often quietly call in specialist hunters who, after dark, will use either bows and arrows, or silenced subsonic firearms to quietly kill and remove the deer herd.
Next morning no one knows anything about it, and wonder where all the deer have gone.
