Escalating tension has experts simulating a new Korean War, and the scenarios are sobering

This is the way a nuclear war begins.

Simulations of a war on the Korean peninsula usually start with a relatively minor incident at the demilitarized zone between South Korea and its hostile northern neighbor, or a provocation that develops into a conventional war and then escalates.

President Trump’s threatening posture toward North Korea — most recently exhibited at the United Nations, where he warned that the U.S. could “totally destroy” the country — has prompted military strategists to examine what would actually happen if a war broke out.

It’s a good thought but don’t forget China would sacrifice half its population at any given moment.

I think it would be like Shock and Awe if we had given Saddam a head start... There will be a lot of destruction in Seoul, but that’s it. A military barrage will take out all of the NORK capability in a few days and eventually repel them from Seoul. Tough to take, but war is Hell.

I already know we need troops on the ground to win the war. A combined war effort. The object here is not win the war outright with only air power, but to suppress artillery to save civilian lives in population areas as that seems to be the big concern.

Vietnam, how many thousands of tons of bombs did we drop? Did we win. Iraq, airpower softened them up but the war was “won” on the ground.

Most bombs dropped in Vietnam were "unguided and dumb bombs" meaning without guidance all the way to the target. These days, a B1 bomber could drop 50 pre-programmed bombs at one time and each one of those bombs would have a distinct GPS coordinate as a target. The accuracy of these bombs are within a few feet. These are Joint Direct Attack Munition or JDAMs. I used for example GBU-30s, which are 500 pound general purpose bombs with a strap on GPS units that moves fins to fly to the target with dead on accuracy. They are cheap and we got plenty in the US munitions inventory.

That was the first thing that popped into my mind.

The predictions were dour and scary. I remember in 1991 PBS ran a show predicting a bloodbath for US forces.

Downtown Seoul is only 35 miles from the DMZ with suburbs encroaching on the DMZ itself.

Being foolish sometimes comes with a high price.

They have had plenty of time to relocate their capital and have not done so. If war comes, the lose of life will be staggering in South Korea.

The Left’s default view (and weak Republicans too) : We can’t afford to go to war with the Norks since it would be too costly in lives and treasure. So the strategy they support is to kick the can down the road, let a future administration deal with it, hopefully wait for an internal regime change. At some point the Norks become a nuclear power equipped with ballistic missiles — a country that not only has a formidable military but that has been conditioned to expect capitulation from the other side (rewards for their lies to us).

They’re now on the cusp of a full nuclear-tipped ballistic missile capability. Trump has secured unprecedented cooperation from China, using our dollar’s status as the world’s reserve currency to ‘persuade’ the Chinese to put the squeeze on the despot Kim. And they really are.

Let’s hope the latest gambit works. Meanwhile we must redouble our efforts to develop anti-misslie defensive capabilities, to gather target intelligence, and to beef up our offensive force structure in theater.

Trump should be quiet. The reality is that Trump’s sanctions are working,

I think that Trump, by not being 'quiet', is the motivation for the sanctions to have an effect. Who can predict what either leader will do. The entire world now has a stake in this matter. Prior administrations didn't want to deal with this nut and it is now Trumps duty to defend our country against all threats.

Trump has had the courtesy to learn the language of his enemy. It has proven to be an effective tool.

This ain’t the last Korean War. The South Koreans have a well trained, well equipped armed forces that will, at the very least, fight the NORKS to a standstill and, I suspect, more likely run over the NORKS.

Military service in South Korea is mandatory. The civilian population is thus not incapable of defending itself.

Then, you throw us in the fight.

Just make sure it is done when the breeze is blowing north.

NK has paid billions to produce their weapons systems. If sanctions are allowed to work. NK will have no tools to fight the sanctions. They want to use their weapons to get the US to act or give them money. But we need to keep the pressure on while keeping military clashes out of it. NK is losing money every day the sanctions are on, and they need cash to import food and other resources.

The NORKs are a proxy for Iran. The mullahs are using Un to draw the US into war.

They will then release a EMP attack on the US with NORK fingerprints.

Agreed, NK has too much power to take out SK. They are all offensive. NK needs to be neutralized in one single fast attack. Then as the dust settles, anything that moves needs to be blown up. There is no reason to allow NK to have time to react. If they see it coming they will try to fire what they have at SK.

If I was Rocketman I would blow up my own capital and palace and blame the USA for the stelth attack. Maybe make sure their is “radar evidence” or some wreckage with USA on them. Lots of life lost (all enemies of Kim). This way he can get Russian and Chinese support. A few videos of dead children and some weeping mothers would push public opinion onto his side—then BLAME TRUMP! He and the CIA did the deed! Maybe a few “Leaks” to the liberal press that Trump “ordered the attack” would do the trick. Hollywood and the Liberals would see this “attack” as a way to dump Trump! Once Trump is out Hillary would give billions to North Korea for peaceful atomic research and the North Korean “Space Program”.

President Trump’s threatening posture toward North Korea

Nice bit of communist propaganda bias there from the LA Slimes. Rocket Boy is the troublemaker, the one with a threatening posture toward Japan and USA.

The one thing we know for sure, we cannot fire FIRST on this one.
