Roku, a company capitalizing on the cord cutting trend to the tune of a $100 million IPO, is today launching its own channel for users of Roku streaming players, sticks and TVs, which will connect customers to hundreds of movies and some TV shows they can stream for free. The channel itself will include content Roku has licensed directly from studios, as well as movies aggregated from other channel publishers on its platform.
Like its rivals Apple TV, Chromecast and Amazon Fire TV Roku offers an easy way to access all the top streaming services, as well as many of the niche players. However, unlike the other competitors, Roku hasnt really used its platform as a way to push its own video marketplace or streaming service the way Apple does with iTunes, Google with Google Play Movies & TV, and Amazon does with Amazon Video and Prime Video.
Thats now changing with todays launch of The Roku Channel, as the new service is called.
Rokus previous channels Roku Recommends, launched in 2011 and 4K Spotlight, launched in 2015 were curated selections of video content.

NEW! - THE ROKU CHANNEL https://blog.roku.com/blog/2017/09/06/introducing-the-roku-channel-free-movies-and-more/
My ROKU is the only thing connected to my TV any more.
There is more free content than you could possibly ever watch.
Channel not available for all Roku products at this time. Bummer.
“for” should be “on”
I’ve got older models, so I have to wait until they release it for the ones I have.
Just went there. Says coming soon.
Same here.
We use ours every day. The President speaks, we’re able to hear live and in person. Some really good movies have been found (free to watch, of course) Still an over supply of not so great movies and crazy video, but things are looking up - this move by ROKU being the first step. Our ROKU equipment is not one of the first on line to be able to accept this new renovation, but we’re closely watching.
Still use our OTA for local stations. A really, really, REALLY good movie was seen on the GRIT channel Sunday afternoon. “The Inside Man” Interesting - if only that this movie was one seen several years ago and we had been searching to view again. Bring out the POPCORN :)
What do you need to hook up and what is the cost?
You can get a Roku Device for about $40. Plugs into your TV’s HDMI port.
Nothing. You buy the device and plug it in your TV and internet.
Just bought a new 32” Roku TV for my office. $135. I like it. ;o)
:)
Be sure to go to streaming channels at the ROKU site and subscribe to X-TV (a private channel) It’s Free and it’s GRReat!

I have XTV - it’s usually the ONLY thing I watch.
You buy the Roku device at Best Buy. Under $50 I think.
Then you hook it up to your TV and it connects to your WIFI
that’s it. Tons of content.
I have internet Sling TV with a Roku stick too, $20/month and added the Sports feature ($5), to watch College football. A great deal, glad I cut the cable cord.
ROKU xtv bump
Make sure you have broadband with sufficient bandwidth...no dial-up, no ISDN.
Don’t think it works for us poor DSL users who have a download rate of about 2.4mps. Too slow to play in the big leagues...
Most importantly you need streaming internet. Then you need a Roku device. The device needs to be logged in to the wifi and then to Roku.
I the devices are available direct from Roku and there are lots of the not up to date devices on Ebay. The top uses on my ROKU are Netflix, Amazon and on trial Britbox. There are lots and lots of free movies on numerous free channels that have ads of some kind. Mostly they are bad to really bad movies.
It’ll be interesting to see if Roku can measure up to netflix.
I recently had a Freeper tell about Youtube on Roku. I have found several good things there and am now enjoying again the Horatio Hornblower series.
If only, (a little Holes lingo there) there was good stream of Fox news, cable would be gone
