Hurricane Irma: Dog owners fleeing Irma leave pets tied to trees

Some Glades residents fleeing Hurricane Irma left their pets tethered to trees and cars before evacuating the area, county officials said Saturday.

Dianne Sauve, head of Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, said the department will be pursuing criminal charges against owners who abandoned their dogs and left them tied up in places where they would not be able to escape the storm.

Animal control officers rescued 26 dogs from Pahokee and Belle Glade on Friday.

I'd have a hard time arguing against that. At minimum, these "people" should be barred from ever owning another pet for the rest of their lives and if found with one they go to prison.

Cats and dogs are so trusting, and to betray that trust this way...inexcusable.

According to wiki: The racial makeup of Pahokee in 2000 was 56.06% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 15.20% from other races, and 2.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 29.46% of the population. Whites not of Hispanic origin made up 13.6% of the populace.

As for Belle Glade, about the same. Fewer than half of the households with children had married parents both present. These are folks who just have a dog for security, or dog fighting. They aren't pet-owners.

If pointing this out makes me a racist, I'm sorry, but I just don't care anymore.

I am in total agreement with you! This is the among the cruelest acts of animal abuse perpetrated by a pet owner! Theses owners should be on a registry that prohibits them from ever owning an animal again.
