Yes. And it doesn’t have a thing to do with the color of anyone’s skin. I’m always dodging through groups who take up the whole sidewalk just strolling along.
I live in NJ and commute to Manhattan where I have worked and walked for over 10 years, in both mid-town and down-town.
My commute involves a daily round-trip walk of 1.4 miles through the streets of the city. I also take lunch breaks in city parks and I am a habitual people-watcher and most definitely do notice minor acts of rudeness.
Common examples of rudeness I have noticed:
Carrying an over-sized umbrella down too low, sticking it in people’s faces and not folding it closed when walking under long runs of protective-but-sidewalk-cramping scaffolding.
Large group of people standing looking around which way to go blocking the whole sidewalk.
Many others, too numerous to mention.
I don’t make an issue of any of these, never get in any arguments or altercations, ever. But I do NOTICE.
And I have NEVER seen the behavior described here. Not once.
This person is a liar, plain and simple.
Maybe others recognize that he works for the nyslimes and appropriately show him derision and ridicule?

It must very well be a learning experience. They guy on the curb end will learn to position himself near the wall next time and let someone else get the message. :)

In my father’s world a gentleman always cedes right of way to a lady. He also grants her passage through the shade on a hot day and he walks in the sun if the shade line of the building is only illuminating half of the sidewalk. These rules adjust when here is danger afoot. As a man, my body is used to grease the skids of the sleigh that carries woman forward through time. This is my burden as well as my privilege. I accept it willingly, gladly and with pride that I am entrusted with such an important task.
Any other kind of man is a dud in my father’s world.

The author actually sounds like a well mannered, reasonable and respectable guy who has made an observation and wonders if racism might play a role. The solution is simple, observe if women do the same thing to other races of men that they do to him.
If I was in his position and was really irritated that people did not move politely aside or alter their body position while passing I would just stop. That would give them the choice of walking into me or walking around. I think he would find that almost every woman would walk around him.

Years ago, there used to be separate drinking fountains. Does there now have to be separate lanes on public sidewalks? I thought that was changed to be equal?
