Film Review: Christopher Nolan’s ‘Dunkirk’
Hollywood Reporter ^ | July 17, 2017 | Todd McCarthy

Christopher Nolan's new film follows soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire, Canada and France as they're surrounded by the German army and evacuated during the eponymous World War II battle.

Dunkirk is an impressionist masterpiece. These are not the first words you expect to see applied to a giant-budgeted summer entertainment made by one of the industry's most dependably commercial big-name directors. But this is a war film like few others, one that may employ a large and expensive canvas but that conveys the whole through isolated, brilliantly realized, often private moments more than via sheer spectacle, although that is here, too. Somber, grim and as resolute in its creative confidence as the British are in this ultimate historical narrative of having one's back to the wall, this is the film that Christopher Nolan earned the right to make thanks to his abundant contributions to Warner Bros. with his Dark Knight trilogy. He's made the most of it.

The only British character actor missing is Sean Bean. This would be another movie questioning whether his character makes it to the end. I read Nolan shot the movie on IMAX cameras. I might drive 2 hours to the closest real IMAX theater, not the fake ones that happened to be labeled IMAX.

Looks like a potentially good movie. Hopefully it will educate many about the story of the event.

I wonder if they’ll be any roles for black female lesbian transgenders...

A short story I read in high school (and that wasn't yesterday)The Snow Goose. is a better telling of the story of Dunkirk.

That was a shining moment in British military history... a defeat and in a way, a victory, too.

The story of Dunkirk (for anyone who understands what happened and what it meant) is remarkable and very emotional. To suffer that kind of a wholesale military and psychological reverse and at the same time to demonstrate, in their abject defeat, such a stern, resolute national character, valor and near religious sense of duty. Also I think it's sort of timely... actually Britain 'against all odds' seemingly defeated but ultimately victorious... like the Brexit

I’m looking forward to it. I made my boyfriend sit through “The Big Sick” - though he appeared to enjoy it - by promising to see “Dunkirk” opening weekend. Little did he know that I’ve wanted to see it ever since the first trailers came out.

Christopher Nolan is one of the few Conservatives in Hollywierd. Everything he does is excellent.

“ ....However matters may go in France or with the French Government or with another French Government, we in this island and in the British Empire will never lose our sense of comradeship with the French people. If we are now called upon to endure what they have suffered we shall emulate their courage, and if final victory rewards our toils they shall share the gains, aye. And freedom shall be restored to all. We abate nothing of our just demands—Czechs, Poles, Norwegians, Dutch, Belgians, all who have joined their causes to our own shall be restored.

What General Weygand has called the Battle of France is over ... the Battle of Britain is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilisation. Upon it depends our own British life, and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us. Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be freed and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands.

But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new dark age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves, that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, This was their finest hour.

Mrs. Miniver was an excellent film dealing with that period.

Has it got something other than color and CGIs that the 1958 version did not have?

Hmmm. By today’s youth and their expertise, is this a movie about English cigarettes? Oh, that would be Dunhill. Most of today’s youth haven’t a single clue about sacrifice. A lot of whiney ungrateful snots with “high” expectations of being rewarded for not doing a whole lot. Is history even brought up in schools anymore? I know there are exceptions to that.

Yeah, who needs color? And what idiot would use any CGI to enhance a shot?

You should read more about how Nolan makes his films.

Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilisation.

Truer words were never spoken, and they are apropos to America with Donald Trump as President, and the Uniparty Swamp as the Enemy that he faces—along with We the People...

“The only British character actor missing is Sean Bean.”

Probably because Nolan always keeps people guessing, and if we saw Bean, we’d already know he was going to die.
