Frances new environment minister said Monday nearly a third of the countrys reactors could be shut under plans to scale back the amount of electricity produced from nuclear power.
In 2015, the previous Socialist-dominated parliament passed a law obliging the government to reduce the proportion of electricity generated from nuclear to 50 percent by 2025 compared with around 75 percent now.
We can all understand that to reach this target, were going to have to close a certain number of reactors, Nicolas Hulot told RTL radio. It will be perhaps as high as 17 reactors, but we need to look into it. [ ]
France has 58 nuclear reactors operated by state-owned EDF, which produces some of the lowest-cost electricity in Europe. The country earns about 3 billion ($3.4 billion) each year from exports to neighboring countries.

Liberals are suicidal and insane. . . or vive versa.
And what are they going to do with the industrial grade material?
rwood
With all the Muslims in France, their nuclear reactors have become a huge liability.
They won’t need as much electricity after the terrorists get through with them.
The French have an uncanny ability to forget the past and destroy themselves again and again. Viva la stupidité!
An environmentalist is going to Get rid of their very successful and highly profitable nuclear power and replace it with what?
Windmills?
Lol.
He should talk to a freshman engineering student and run some numbers on that.
Total retardation of Frogs.
You don’t need electricity to roast rats over a camel dung fire.
Are they going to switch over to good reliable American LNG to fuel their power plants?
MAGA again and again.
The French ill get power from DeGaulle spinning in his grave. He wanted France to be a powerful nation-remember he did NOT surrender to the Nazis.
No windmills and no solar panels, but good ole American LNG like the Poles and the Ukraine plan to use( and China too).
1,2,3,... MAAAAAAAAAAAGAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
I want to say this is mass insanity, but with the Muslims taking over it’s for the best.
Holland has windmills. I’ve seen pictures. Very old paintings as a matter of fact.
That's "progressives" for you.
Brought to us by the same people who built HALF of a heavy-armed fortified wall to keep out the Nazi Machine, but haughtily refused to build the other half. The Nazis drove around the wall, tore down the fortifications, and turned the large guns against the meager remaining French resistance.

Actually they did build an extended wall to areas that it was likly the Germans would attack. Rommel went through it like a hot knife through butter. Shaped charges, assault guns, paratroops, and smoke screens destroyed the effectiveness of fixed fortifications.
They face lengthy safety vetting processes, hefty investment and political challenges to gain extensions in their operating life.
It cost a lot of money to close a nuclear power plant too.
The US commercial power plants are required to put money toward decommissioning in an escrow account for decommissioning for each megawatt generated.
But these plants are owned by the government. So, anyone willing to bet that there is money sitting in an escrow account to take these plants back to green field conditions?
But put that money back in to the plants to have them run for another 20 or more years and you reap dividends.
Keep the Nukes running you dont have to build unsightly wind turbines that puree birds or solar panels that only generate power when the sun shines.
Base load power that is cheap and reliable or power that is only there during the day or when the wind decides to blow and cost a fortune?
Its a no brainer in my opinion. But I'm not French.
