Flight delayed for hours after woman throws coins into engine for good luck

But when your trip is delayed because a fellow passenger has done something really, really stupid, they’re even worse.

That’s what happened on Tuesday in China, where a plane was grounded for several hours – because an elderly woman threw coins into one of its engines. The 80-year-old, whose surname is Qiu, police said, told officers she did it for good luck.

Officials said she threw nine coins at an engine of China Southern Airlines flight CZ380 as she was boarding at Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

Eventually they were all accounted for

The flight was grounded for hours (Picture: AsiaWire) As a result, nearly 150 passengers had to be escorted off the aircraft bound for Guangzhou in southern China.

Even more frustratingly for the other passengers, her aim was terrible – eight of the nine coins missing the target, but the other nestled in the engine. In a statement posted on Weibo, China Southern Airlines said: ‘A senior passenger threw coins to the plane’s engine and delayed the flight. The passenger involved has been taken away by police.

Throw coins in a fountain and come back. Throw coins in a jet engine and you’re finished.

Sure. Throwing crap into the engine is always ‘good luck’ for a safe flight.

What a great idea!

I’ll throw a coin at the neighbor kids engine in his car when he comes screaming down the road.

One of those coins from Yap.

So THAT’S what happened to that flight from Australia where the vibration made them turn back.

I think you’re mixing up your ancient good luck traditions. It’s coins in airplane engines. Water balloons filled with paint for kids in screaming cars.

Anybody who’s spent any time on a Chinese domestic airline knows the pure INSANITY on display.

That Chinese do have a fascination with and fixation on “lucky” numbers and lucky months, etc. Maybe a fortune cookie told her that she’d be in for some good luck if she flew high.

flight info says this is an international flight between Japan to Shanghai. Moreover, the plane is not small - its an airbus A320.

Even if boarding from the ground and not a retractable boarding bridge (which is odd for international flights), how did an old woman get close enough to a plane engine to throw coins in it?

Yep.

You’re right.

Lost my mind there for a minute.

It rolled out of my ear again.

So that’s what we will put up with when the Chinese start sending over their cars: coins in the engine. Good night! Their sheet rock was bad enough.
