A cholera outbreak in Yemen is gaining momentum, adding to the misery of the Arab worlds poorest country which is already wracked by war and on the brink of famine.
Around 51 people have been killed since the outbreak began in late April and the rate of deaths has been increasing in recent days,
according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Yemens healthcare system has been decimated during two years of fighting and medicines are in desperately short supply,
partly because of a blockade enforced by the Saudi-led military coalition that supports Yemens government.
Around 7 million of the countrys 27 million people are facing emergency shortages of food, according to the UN, just one level below all-out famine.
Two-thirds of the population does not have access to clean drinking water.

Around 2,752 suspected cases of cholera have been detected in Yemen since late April, according to the WHO.
WHO is in full emergency mode to contain the recent upsurge of suspected cholera cases, said Dr Nevio Zagaria, the WHOs representative in Yemen.
We are very concerned with the re-emergence of cholera across several areas of Yemen in the past couple of weeks.
Efforts must be scaled-up now to contain the outbreak and avoid a dramatic increase in cases of diarrhoeal disease.
Already 25 deaths, and infection rose steeply, doubling in four (4) days.
oh that’s a shame. wake me when something happens that directly affects America
Gee...that’s a shame....
Try a drop of bleach in the water.
Lick the pages of your korans. Surely alla provides nourishment there for his faithful.
It’s a backward country. Some people, particularly the illiterate, may be uneducated regarding the importance of purifying their drinking water. It’s also very dry, so water is scarce.
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
