Agreed.
Eff ESPN..
And the horses they rode in on.
Well...almost!
When I was nine, I played in a youth basketball league on the base in Japan, and there were a lot of kids in that league.
I did get a trophy, the only sports trophy I ever got...it was a trophy for “Tries Hardest”!
Now, I was able to recognize that there was some committee out there that said “That kid tries really hard, skins his knees and elbows diving for balls and all, but...he ain’t got a lick of aptitude for the sport! Let’s give him the ‘Tries Hardest’ trophy...”
There were hundreds of kids in that league, but they only gave out one. It took a little while to register the real meaning of that trophy, and I guess it was kind of a participation trophy!
Honestly, as for this ESPN thing, I have to admit that I do feel sympathy for some of the individual people getting fired, I am sure some are just low-level employees who might disagree with the company’s line on things, but...a job is a job. So I have to concede that.
But the entity of ESPN-I wish only negative things for them, even though they do have a writer working for them whose work I really like and respect. He steers clear of the political stuff. I can’t remember reading much or any of his stuff tainted by the liberal bully pulpit ESPN uses like a cudgel on its customers. And he could get a job fairly easily if they let him go, I think.
Bluberty! :)
I can’t believe they’re so upset they’re admitting it’s getting to them! ;-D
I didn’t think of it that way, but I think you are right.
You know, if they just stuck to sports reporting, I wouldn’t feel this way.
But they don’t. It invades every aspect of everything they do.
Correction: Rusillo still has a job, but ESPN has announced his role will be “greatly reduced.” Ditto for Hannah Storm and Karl Ravech. In broadcast-speak, that means polish up your resume and audition tape; you won’t be getting another contract with us.
Looking at the list of layoffs and their job titles, you can see that ESPN had a staffing and payroll problem. Maybe I’m not enough of a sports fan, but a broadcast network doesn’t need a “beat writer” for the Los Angeles Dodgers, given the number of papers, wire services and blogs that already follow the team. And from what I hear, ESPN paid very well, based on the days when the network was the biggest cash cow in cable.
NextGen ESPN will have a lot of free-lancers and part-timers. You can already see that at work on the SEC Network, which ESPN owns along with the conference. Hubbed out of Charlotte (lower production and labor costs), ESPN holds down costs by using video feeds from the host schools for minor sports. So far, the SEC Network is making a lot of money for ESPN, but not enough to offset the huge numbers of cable subscribers who have cut the cord and moved on.
Man, don’t blame yourself.
Or your employer.
Or even the messenger.
Blame the smirking observer that had nothing to do with your firing.
I smirk; therefore I am.
ESPN made their bed.Now they can lay in it.Thats what happens when you attack a large portion of your viewers.
Just dumb.
Where do I go to register my “lack of compassion” where the jock sniffers will be sure to see it?
I guess they are all on the team that thinks we are DEPLORABLE. Long live the DEPLORABLES!!
Confirmation of that’s all who’s watching nowadays
My wife and I notice all the token minorities on TV shows and commercials now and ask: is that who’s watching Prime Time these days?
No different than what’s happening at ESPN. Their little niche market will keep going southbound
“Mike and Mike” targets the only demographic ESPN covers. The 18 to 39 year old.
Fire all these LIB - LOSERS at espn. They forgot about sports a long time ago. I laugh at their tears and pain.
ESPN COVETS...curse you auto correct!!!
Mike & Mike will now be only Mike. Greenberg gets his own show, no word on what happens to Golic. I can’t stand Greenberg. Didn’t care much for their show and his so unathletic, metrosexual schtick. Definitely skip his show now
If I were most of the ESPN “personalities”, I’d just suck it up and move along. At least they didn’t have to train their far inferior replacements from India under penalty of losing their severance pay. Like a lot of us “little people” out in the hinterlands who did!
As far as I’m concerned, ESPN has been trash ever since they de-emphasized the “S” in their name in favor of the “E”. That and the Mickey Mouse influence from their lords and overseers.
