Family Finds $14K on Side of Road; Returns it to Rightful Owner

Not many people run across $14K just sitting on the side of the road.

But, the Bowers family sure did on April 8th as they were driving to enjoy a nearby park.

"My wife was driving and I said 'honey, turn around there's something in the road back there," said Jake Bowers.

Bowers says there was a bag on Wilson Bridge Road in Worthington. He thought it may have been someone's laptop bag.

"It was off to the side a little bit almost in the gutter," said Bowers.

"We grabbed the bag and the kids said what is it!?"

To their surprise, there were thousands of dollars and a wallet with ID inside.

"There were a couple envelopes and then the corners were open and you could see inside that they were stuffed with hundred dollar bills," said Bowers.

140 hundred dollar bills equaling $14,000.

"It was a good opportunity to teach the kids about doing the right thing," said Bowers.

Bowers says he and his family drove the money straight to the Worthington Police station. A wallet including the owner's ID helped detectives get the money back to its rightful owner.

"While that money could have meant paying off our cars or going on a vacation to us, it may have meant groceries or sustenance to someone else," said Bowers.

According to a Worthington Police report, the owner of the cash had gone to a car dealer on Huntley Road to purchase a vehicle. However, he left the location without making a purchase.

The owner says he must have left the bag on the roof of his car and forgot about it as he drove home.

The Bowers family says they are just happy they were able to help.

Imagine that. A guy went to a car lot with cash and the salesman couldn’t make a deal.

Someone paying for a car with 14k cash is LIKELY committing a crime or an utter moron.

The family had seen “No Country for Old Men” and didn’t want any part of the action.

Most likely. Only very old people and criminals do not use banks.

Not necessarily. It can be the surest way not to get ripped off.

We sold a car on Craig’s list. The buyer paid cash. Close to $9K.

We did the transaction in a bank, where the bills were counted and verified and deposited in our account. And there was a notary there for us to sign over the title and bill of sale.

Having over 10K in cash is reason enough for police to seize your money.

I’ve found credit and debit cards people left at post offices and gas stations and called the issuers to let them know.

Every time I am told to destroy them and my honesty is appreciated. I’d like to hope that if roles were reversed, a stranger would do the same.

Really?

Being an idiot isn’t against the law or I’d be in prison for life :)

The most I’ve ever carried was a thousand in my wallet to an underground casino in Brooklyn.

It was 10 minutes away and I wasn’t trilled about it!

If the person wanted it that badly, they would have had it more secure.

hmmm- high rollers routinely carry 100’s of 1000’s of dollars to high stakes games- I wasn’t aware that it was against the law to carry large sums of money?

....or they saw the episode of "The Honeymooners" where Ralph finds a suitcase filled with money on the bus.

It started with the Bank Secrecy Act. Banks must report transactions of 10K. And You must report over 10k to Customs when traveling.

I know Civil Asset Forfeiture has been used to seize over 10K. They tried to steal 53K from a charity.

Having over 10K in cash is reason enough for police to seize your money.

If that's true it shouldn't be. Lots of people don't trust banks for one reason or another.

The people who turned the money in have made a nice deposit into their karma bank.

It's not, but the Police/IRS have seized accounts anyways.

I would have done the same thing.

Me too. But if there was no ID in the bag I probably would've kept it and not "donated" it to the police.

I did find a wallet once that had been stolen and left in the street where I walked. There were no bills in the usual place but in my search to find a local address for the owner I found an old Silver Certificate $20 bill. After I located the owner he told me that bill had been given to him many years before by his deceased wife. Then he cried.
