Equating the Holocaust to the ban use of chemical weapons in combat is putting Hitler (who was gassed in WWI) on some kind of morally Higher Ground because he would then be a victim of gas first by the allied powers in WW1

The point Spicer was trying to make was correct.Hitler never used chemical weapons *in combat*,whereas Assad appears to have done so.Spicer worded his comments very poorly and could reasonably have been expected to issue a “clarification”...but not an apology.

I suppose to be considered a chemical *weapon* it has to be used in warfare. Technically speaking, condemned inmates in the US are put to death with chemicals, but nobody would say a lethal injection is a weapon.

That said, didn't certain eisengruppen/extermination squads (or however it's spelled) units make limited use of gas against civilian areas in the east, or am I totally misremembering?

He meant that Hitler did not use chem. weapons in war with allies. But it is not a completely true statement standing alone as he did use them against innocent Jewish people, and enemies of the State.
