Lyme disease is set to explode and we still don’t have a vaccine

A new prediction says 2017 and 2018 will see major Lyme disease outbreaks in new areas.
This could lead to lifelong health consequences, so where's the vaccine?

Thanks to a changing climate it could be one of the worst on record: the ticks that carry the disease have been found in places where it has never before been a problem
– and where most people don’t know how to respond.
The danger zone isn’t confined to the US: similar signs are flagging potential outbreaks in Europe. Polish researchers predict a major outbreak there in 2018.

In theory, Ostfeld’s early warning system gives public health officials a two-year window to prepare.
In many other cases, this would be enough time to roll out a vaccination programme.
But there is no human vaccine for Lyme disease. Why not?
And what can you do to protect yourself in the meantime?

Lyme disease is the most common infection following an insect bite in the US:
the Centers for Disease Control estimates that 300,000 Americans contract Lyme disease each year, calling it “a major US public health problem”.
While it is easy enough to treat if caught early, we are still getting to grips with lifelong health problems that can stem from not catching it in time.

Lyme disease can lead to a host of problems, chronic joint inflammation, facial palsy, issues with short-term memory, heart rhythm irregularities, and inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.
(More information and a map of recent tick/ Lyme expansion is available at the newscientist.com site)

Saw “changing climate” and the ahoooooga alarm triggered, and left the site.

When I was in the UK years ago, the New Scientist was actually a pretty good mag.

Evidently, the title “New Scientist” does indeed point to new things, such as fake news.

They seem to forget where the grandfather of all climate change lies started (complete with falsified data and emails to back up the fact that this was known and encouraged): the University of East Anglia.

The following is not meant to make light of serious issue.

However I tell a good friend who is a tree hugger, that 1 we are but a pimple on earths rear end, occasionally we get popped. 2. For every disease we conquer earth has infinite possibilities just waiting to get the humans on this planet.

When all else fails humans probably can devise more ways to kill other humans than nature has waiting in the wings.

There was a human vaccine - they pulled it.

There is a vaccine for dogs for Lyme - my mini pin was living proof that it did not work.

Lyme is relatively easy to treat if caught fairly early - often it does give a distinctive bulls-eye rash as an additional clue. Other symptoms are like the flu - usually out of season.

Docs are learning to treat Lyme that it does not recur from the original infection.

If you left the site at changing climate you missed out on the rest of the info. The “changing climate” was the only mention and had more to do with bumper crops of acorns, due to weather.

Bring back the Lyme disease vaccine.

Good article here:

Actually, modern science has given us a human vaccine against Lyme disease.

Too bad we don’t use it.

"Lyme disease is the only infection I know of where we have a safe and effective vaccine, but it’s not available to the public,” says Dr. Allen Steere, the physician who uncovered the disease. Steere was 33 years old back in 1975 when he was sent to the Connecticut town of Lyme to look into a mysterious cluster of kids who had gotten arthritis.

It’s not AIDS so it goes on the back burner.

We could find a cure OR kill the ticks with DDT.

My sister-in-law suffered a life threatening stroke in the brain from a heart arrhythmia caused by the Lyme Borrelia bacteria boring into her heart muscles. This problem has been going on for thousands of years. You would think scientists would have come up with a cure by now.

As best I can tell, you don’t even need a bite. Lyme is the new fibromyalgia/CFS. I know a dozen people who self-diagnosed themselves to have it and are trying to get The Disability for it.

It is not climate change, we have let the timber rats (deer) to breed and spread. If they don’t kill you directly by jumping in front of your car, they get you with their biological weapons (deer ticks).

Bambi is the enemy.

Let’s see, the scare mongers have been working overtime preparing us for the next BLACK PLAGUE that will kill us all! It may be Zika, Marburg, Ebola, Yellow Fever and now Lyme again.

I still remember when we were warned of VEE (Venezuelan equine encephalitis) back in the early 1960s. Then the Swine flu in the 1970s.

#8: "It’s not AIDS so it goes on the back burner."

Yes to that; and it mostly affects people like farmers, surveyors, hunters, fisherman, ranchers, outdoorsmen, hikers, etc. You know, flyover country people.

We should take a few deer ticks and release them into NYC hotels to share the wealth.

Doctors, Insurance Companies and Pharm Houses don’t make squat off vaccines.

Bigger profits in treating pain...or depression - - you know - drug-pusher lite stuff.

People will die, be crippled, whatever... our guys go for the big money.

If Lyme disease only affected people with aids there’d been a cure 10 years ago.
