FULL TITLE: 'I just got hit by a train': Horrific audio emerges of honor student, 17, calling 911 after having both legs severed by a train

Audio has emerged of the 17-year-old Georgia high school senior calling 911 after having both of his legs severed by a train this week.

The victim, identified as Jacob Ohl, was rescued alongside the train tracks near Shelly Lane in Lilburn, Georgia when he was struck by a northbound CSX train at 1pm on Thursday.

He can be heard calling local authorities sounding extremely calm - likely the effect of extreme shock and adrenaline setting in after the accident.

I’ve had extreme shock and adrenaline after an accident and I can’t control THE VOLUME OF MY VOICE! as Austin Powers would say.

Two of my high school classmate died on their way to school. Story was his brakes failed as they approached a railroad crossing and a southbound train hit their car.

Tragic.

“He can be heard calling local authorities sounding extremely calm”

I was pretty calm after that kid took the nose off my car back January 2010.
I was told by the 911 dispatcher that I was too calm.
I said, “Ma’am, how could I help you help me if I lost it? I mean, I can freak out if you want.”
I admit, it was cruel to make her laugh.
But I figured I’d just delay response if I lost it.

...and he's CALM!

True story...for years I worked in the ER of a major (and well known) hospital.Next door to the hospital was a huge office building that housed the offices of many of the physicians and surgeons on the staff. One day we got a call from the office of one of the well known (and well respected) heart surgeons. We were alerted to the arrival of one of his patients...critically ill.Seems the surgeon had recently performed major surgery on the man and something went very wrong during a routine post op office visit.Things were so bad that the surgeon had to "open" the patients chest so he could place a finger on the area that had sprung a leak.

He arrived in our ER with his surgeon's hand in his chest and on his heart. The patient appeared amazingly calm. The nurse, wanting to quickly get a specimen for the blood bank, pulled the top off a tube and gently scraped it against his bloody chest.

"Ow,that hurts" said the patient.Within seconds of this the patient was on his way to the OR.We learned that he died a couple of days later.

One of my most vivid memories of my job there.

"His mother Fern said: 'Jacob told the 911 operator and told us immediately that he was walking down the center of the tracks with his earbuds on."

He chose poorly.

“Jacob told the 911 operator and told us immediately that he was walking down the center of the tracks with his earbuds on. He made sure to point out that the noise cancelling function was not on.”

For an honor student, he doesnt sound that smart.

For the life of me I don’t know why anyone would walk down tracks in the first place, but with something in their ears? An accident on train tracks (unless brakes fail, etc.) is one of the most avoidable, IMHO.

He got hit by a train?

*sigh* some day scientists are going to find a way to know where a train is going so people can stay out of its way...

I see so many people walking down the street or just out in public with those stupid earphones on. You lose so much situational awareness when you have loud music blasting in your ears.

I wonder how many accidents and assaults in colleges and in places where youth congregate can be attributed to the victim having no awareness that someone dangerous was nearby due to wearing earphones.

Yep that’s important. It almost feels like panic sometimes when I’m driving with loud music playing - and I get into heavy traffic.

The first thing I do is apply the brakes as needed - while I’m simultaneously cutting the volume on the stereo. I can’t stand noise when I need to be aware of my surroundings. Even the A/C or heater fan on high is too much.

I cannot believe it when I see someone wearing earbuds while driving...

His mother Fern said: ‘Jacob told the 911 operator and told us immediately that he was walking down the center of the tracks with his earbuds on. He made sure to point out that the noise cancelling function was not on.

‘Like any of us would, he feels embasassed [sic] that this happened. He says he heard/sensed the train behind him. He does not remember exactly if he jumped, fell or was knocked out of the way just in time. He is sure that the train never sounded its whistle.’

*THIS* is what passes for an ‘honor’ student?

But, it’s OK, he’s at least embarrassed.
