WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD JANUARY 27, 2017
freerepublic | 1/27/2017 | greeeyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Greetings to everyone. It has been just slightly above freezing today, but at least the sun was shining. Not much doing with gardening yet.

I have been concentrating on restocking some supplies - Placed an order with the LDS on line store for dehydrated foods. I expect food prices to rise, so buying now. I bought some cans that are good for 20 - 30 years, so make for good long term storage in case of an emergency, and a hedge against inflation.

Next week will be looking at canning some meats, if there is a good sale.

Hope all is good with you and your families. Have a great weekend. Prayers up for all. God Bless.

This year, I will remove the azaleas out front and replace with knockout roses. The ones up front simply trap too many leaves, and it’s too hard to remove them, so out they go.

We have never been able to get azaleas to grow here. Roses do a bit better.

Missouri. Our soil is lousy clay and wrong ph. We are also a bit further north of the area that does have decent azaleas.

If there’s an Aldi in your area, they often run really good meat sales on Wednesday. Sometimes they announce what they’re putting on sale, other times not, but I’m rarely disappointed.

I have rose questions; is it possible to address the whole gardening gang?

No Aldi’s, but we have Country Mart and Save a Lot. The sales ad is out on Wed. AM. So I check it and make out a list. If he sale is really good, I do some canning. If it’s just a little sale, I just buy for the week.

Well, if you post now, there will probably be some people that will see it and respond. TIK is usually pretty good, but may not be one the thread for a few days. TIK is a master gardener, and usually answers very thoroughly.

So I’d just post the questions, and address it to all.

The warming trend is over in North Alabama, we are back to the normal of low 50’s during the day and low 30’s at night. I did get the plastic on the other greenhouse and started moving cabbage and scallion flats there to make some room in the sprout house. Wednesday is the next big planting day for early tomatoes. I will be planting about a 1000 to include: Early Girl, New Girl, Celebrity, Cherokee Purple, Burpee Bush steak, and 11 varieties of cherry tomatoes.

5th Annual ‘Appalachian Seed Swap’ held in Pikesville, KY is coming up on Saturday, April 1st. 500 people from TEN states attended last year to buy and sell seed...they expect around 700 this year. Admission is FREE...if you’re a gardening fool; then this event is well worth it...I’ve picked up some amazing heirloom seed at these events. They have a Facebook page for those who want more info.
