It's supposed to answer any question posed to it, making life easier for owners of the device.
But the Amazon Echo has been caught out trying to pronounce the 58 letters of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.
The Echo and its virtual assistant called Alexa, was a popular Christmas gift this year
Alexa performs tasks at the vocal request of her owner including internet shopping.
It is capable of voice interaction, music playback, making to-do lists, setting alarms, streaming podcasts, playing audiobooks, and providing weather, traffic and other real time information.
It can also control several smart devices using itself as a home automation hub.
But it can't quite manage Welsh place names!
Cardiff based food blogger Llio Angharad asked her Amazon Echo: Alexa, whats the longest place name in Europe?
The Echo replied with The longest place name in Europe is the Welsh town of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.
"Its the longest town name anywhere. Although there is a hill in New Zealand which is longer.
However it was hardly a comprehensible attempt.
After failing spectacularly it did not even bother trying the name of the New Zealand hill.
Video at site.
This guy gets it:

I refuse to buy anything from Amazon unless i absolutely have to.
I don’t know if it was correct but it was fluent!
Hilarious video posted somewhere the other day of a toddler jabbering some nonsense to Alexa, one of which was answered with a long string of sexual terms....mom and dad didn’t think it was so cute then!
Say what?
Let’s hear it say “Ph’nglui mglw’nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn”
The real name if the town is Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll.
The long version is simply a marketing name made up to popularize the city. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. I guess it’s been in use for so long now that it could be considered legitimate as a town name though. I wish the article had mentioned the name of the hill in New Zealand. Naturally I had to dig that up too; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu.
I do wonder why Alexa is getting so much news recently. I first talked to one of them more than a year ago.
Here you go...rolls right off your tongue.
It's the home town of Johann Gambolputty de von Ausfern-schplenden-schlitter-crasscrenbon-fried-digger-dingle-dangle- dongle-dungle-burstein-von-knacker-thrasher-apple-banger-horowitz- ticolensic-grander-knotty-spelltinkle-grandlich-grumblemeyer- spelterwasser-kurstlich-himbleeisen-bahnwagen-gutenabend-bitte-ein- nurnburger-bratwustle-gernspurten-mitz-weimache-luber-hundsfut- gumberaber-shonedanker-kalbsfleisch-mittler-aucher von Hautkopft of Ulm.
And Jon Doe.
That is the sort of thing that should have been programmed in separately.
Obviously, you’re not an obsessive programming purist.
