That’s one small step for man, one GIANT LEAP for mankind.

Talk about timing.

1/6 the gravity means you can jump 3 times as high.

Hopefully the subsequent landing feels equally as cushioned! :-)

Charlie Duke tried this on Apollo 16. They wanted to do a "Lunar Olympics" to see how high they could jump, but Mission Control deleted it from their schedule as far too dangerous. John Young did a small 4-foot jump (with his backpack, he weighed over 300 pounds) so of course (and just off camera and WITHOUT authority to do so) Charlie Duke thought he could beat him. So he tried and went up over 4 feet but came down backwards falling on his shoulder and backpack. He thought he was dead because the backpack was somewhat fragile and if anything broke or if the suit caught a rip, he was up **** creek. Video below with great Charlie Duke commentary.

It is my opinion that we never should have landed a man on the moon. It’s a mistake. Now everything is compared to that one accomplishment. Now every body goes “I can’t believe they could land a man on the moon . . . and taste my coffee!” I think we all would have been a lot happier if we hadn’t landed a man on the moon. Then we’d go, They can’t make a prescription bottle top that’s easy to open? I’m not surprised they couldn’t land a man on the moon. Things make perfect sense to me now. Neil Armstrong should have said, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for every whining, complaining, SOB on the face of the earth.”

"That’s one small step for man, one GIANT LEAP for mankind."

That statement has been called the biggest blooper of all time.

Charlie Duke tried this on Apollo 16.

YUP! Charlie Duke did try this, and Mission Control had a fit. I know...I met Charlie many years ago (1980 or so) in Dublin. He had this video and many others that he showed to us. Said Mission Control really called him out on it.

I spent several days with Charlie. And later he stayed with a friend of mine near where I lived in Northern Ireland.

He gave me an autograph in my Bible...Psalm 8 is where he did it...

Jehovah our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy majesty above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou established praise because of thine adversaries, to still the enemy and the avenger.

When I see thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and stars, which thou hast established; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? Thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and splendour.

Thou hast made him to rule over the works of thy hands; thou hast put everything under his feet: Sheep and oxen, all of them, and also the beasts of the field; The fowl of the heavens, and the fishes of the sea, whatever passeth through the paths of the seas. Jehovah our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!

(Psalms 8:1-9)

Funny that people have debated over it forever. Yet he said it exactly as it was supposed to be said.

After all, a guy gets up there on the moon - first time ever so the entire world is paying attention - and he delivers a message from the heavens (the heavens!) that is what, merely a rehearsed commentary (maybe even botched) concocted by NASA?

More like, whose script really was that, anyway?

When God wants to get a message across, He makes sure there are plenty of witnesses.

The stuff that sits in plain sight, connecting heaven and earth.. :)

“That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Yep. The way Neil said it makes no grammatical sense.

Well, he supposedly DID say “a man” but there was a hiccup in the transmission. But, think about that brief moment, first step on the moon. Would be tough to keep it together at that point. Overwhelming.
